And no, there is nothing wrong with my monitor...
One hour into DA2 and I've had to crank up the brightness and gamma levels on my desktop to unreasonable levels in order to see all of the screen! Who's decision was it to ship a game this visually dark at 100% gamma and NOT give the player the ability to adjust it? Why is my now washed-out desktop being held hostage in the name of somebody's idea of "cinematic mood lighting?" Inexplicable, and more annoying than Bethany's voice acting...
Why is this game so dark?

...Your version doesn't have a brightness setting?
Mine does. Complete with a DA2 logo and the whole "Adjust until you can just barely see the logo" note to set the brightness to where it should be...

Nope, no brightness setting. I have the PC version with a "full screen gamma" setting that is set at 1.0 out of the box and can't go any higher.

Well if we talk about darkness we dont have to forget that origins was much darker and red/green stylish graphics on the wilds

Weird, mine has a brightness setting too, and is NOT dark. Bad copy of the game maybe? Go back to the place you got it from and ask for a replacement because the data has been corrupted.

Solution: Had to manually go into the Dragon Age 2 config file (Documents>Bioware>Dragon Age 2>Setting) and raise the max gamma range to 2. Now I can select all values from 0-2.
It'd be nice if this was taken care of out of the box, you know, like it usually is with finished games.

Just to add to this, every time I start up DA2 I have to move the gamma slider back and forth to get it to recognize my change.

I am also having a brightness (or I should say darkness) problem. I'm playing the game on a Mac Pro, screen brightness is fine for everything else on my system except for DA2. I tried editing the ini file as mentioned here, changed gamma value to 1.5 and then 2, but it makes no difference when I start the game. It is still way too dark, and in some areas I can't see any detail at all. Any new suggestions?

Did you try moving around the slider once you got in game? I found that although editing the config file alters the range of gamma, you have to move the slider to get the change to take place. Also note that if you lower the slider from say 1.5 to 1.2, the new value will become the new "max" and you'll have to edit the config if you want to raise it from there again.

Had to do this as well, Im using a setting of 1.28 I belive. Set it at 2 and gradually lower it to desired level.

Yep, I've been adjusting it back and forth a lot, and re-adjusting the slider in-game, but nothing seems to be working. It seems like there is a set limit to the brightness, and nothing that I do will change it. Patch time, Bioware???

I also had an issue with my game being too dark. Adjusting the gamma slider in game fixes it, but it had to be done every time I started the game. Updating my graphics card driver fixed that problem, so now every time I start, the gamma levels remain at the last position I set it to.

Thank you so much for this information, I had sort of just accepted that the game on the PC was super-dark for some reason. I know when I played the Demo on the PC you couldnt adjust the brightness either, which was quite annoying as its nice to actually be able to see stuff. However on the 360 you could adjust the brightness, playing that Demo after the PC one you could really appreciate how nice stuff looked, when you could actually SEE it
. You'd think given how vastly improved the graphics are, particularly on the PC, they'd be going out of their way to make sure everybody could actually see it properly. I don't know how they missed this mistake, thanks for finding a way to fix it, its awesome to actually be able to see the game in all its glory!
