Will check it in my 2nd game too, I accidently sold several good items after realizing you can push her easy to 6-8 mana per HP point.
Used her only twice in some fights where it's best to have only ranged besides the tank and she was doing just fine, so I can imagine that she goes crazy while fully developed as blood mage :)

(besides havin a mage with more than 300HP+)

It appears possible to set Merrill up so that in her "blood mage mode", she's generating health faster than she uses it to power her magic. I couldn't seem to cast fast enough to make her health go down at all.

As for her mana, I set it up to run 4 sustainables:
Blood of the First
Wrath of the Elvhen (w/Arlathan's Grace upgrade)
Death Syphon (w/Death Vortex upgrade)
Rock Armor

Takes some time to get there, but at that point she's as far from "squishy" as you can get in DA2 without being an S&S warrior in full heavy armor.

Death Syphon (w/Death Vortex upgrade) is a waste. It doesn't heal while blood magic is activated. Arcane shield is a better choice.

It counts as "conventional healing" then?  Interesting.  Thank you.  I'll look into Arcane Shield, as you suggest.

At end game, my Merrill has 377 HP and 72% damage reduction from armor (with Rock Armor). She has 54 Magic too, so her spells hit plenty hard. She has a 1:5 blood mana ratio.

Aveline with a STR/CON build currently has 413 HP and 57% armor reduction... and both Merrill and Aveline have the same dodge percentage (8%, from Heroic Aura).

My Merrill has more effective health than my tank (1346 vs 960). That's not squishy.

One tip: Panacea from Anders is health regen... which is NOT "conventional healing". The +50 health regeneration easily compensates her spell costs and effectively gives Merrill +250 bloodmana regen... constantly. Not to mention Merrill has +20 health regen already from her armor. So make that +350 blood mana regen.

EDIT: I neglected some of Aveline's passives and Shield Defense in calculated effective health, but the point still remains the Merrill is far for squishy.
