I bought Mass Effect 1 yesterday (the hard copy, picked it up from Game for a lovely £5) and instantly installed it when i got home. I set it all up, and launched the game, only to be met by a black screen and the windows 7 loading circle staring at me for about five minutes. The only way I could change program was by opening task manager and doing so via that. I thought it might have been a one off, so i tried again with no luck.

So I turned to the forums. The typical solutions are:

"Run in compatability mode." - Done.
"Run as administrator." - Done.
"Update to the latest OpenAL32." - Done.
"Disable integrated sound card." - Done.
"Get latest DirectX." - Done.
"Re-install." - Done and Done again.

I've tried a few more things, but I was doing this all last night until 3am so I can't really remember anything I tried. It's frustrating because for most people at least one of these solutions is working but for me it's just not, nothing will work. Has anybody else been unable to find a solution, or can anybody suggest anything that hasn't already been said?

System Specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.
Processor: AMD Athlon™ X2 Dual Core Processor 3250e (2 CPUs), ~1.5GHz
Memory: 3072MB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
(I'm not really sure what else to put with system specs.)

I think this is normal because I see that same screen for about 15 - 30 seconds before the intro movies start playing. As to it taking 5 minutes, I can only guess. My best guess would probably be your graphics card, it does not process everything as fast. So maybe that is why you see that screen longer. I myself am using a ATI Radeon HD 5570 and it runs great. What I suggest to confirm this is to open Mass Effect and just let the black screen go. Don't click, try to close, press keys, etc. Just let it go and see if it will load. I personally would wait no longer than 10-15 minutes. So just run the game and when the black screen comes up just turn on the TV, read a book, or do something to pass time until it loads.

Ahhhh, thank you for the suggestion, I feel a bit foolish having not tried it myself already despite everything else I did.

The problem is now solved, let's just hope the start up doesn't always take that long. Thanks again!

It should not take that long every time. It gradually gets faster. When I first installed and played Mass Effect, I saw the black screen for over a minute before the movies finally loaded.

It's probably building the local shader cache files. That can take a bit the first time you play. Unless you have a problem and delete them, then that won't happen again on subsequent game launches.
