What's with all the Oblivion hate? Admittedly I never tried to make a male in that yet. I also thought the lizardy guys looked better in Morrowind, especially after a retexture mod.

I think my human (avatar pic) turned out well. Maybe takes just some more effort or an eye for aesthetics, but heck, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
yes but I noticed that the smaller portraits looked a lot better than the in game larger models for some reason.

Oh come on, Dragon Age has a way better CC then both Demons Souls and Oblivion. But in those games you had to fight hard not to make a freak so thats not a big achievement...

I haven't seen a character creator yet that could not make someone look good, very easily, if you have a front and profile picture of a real person to look at while you are doing it. If you just focus on the parts you get a good result, though often not really a likeness of the person with whom you started.
Agreed, if you have a front and side picture, and a offset one as a bonus, you can almost always make a great looking character. How similar it really is to the photo depends partly on your talent and partly on the character creator options, but you can pretty much count on a decent result.
DAO's character creator is better than Mass Effect's (less plastic looking), ME was better than Oblivion, Oblivion was better than Morrowind. It's very much variable with technology, though sometimes the developer makes a change (i.e. there's no mouth shape option in DA:O like there is in ME, negative change).

I found the base elven females not very good looking, and it took a bit of time (20 minutes or so) to figure out how to make them look better. But if you go to the prettiest character thread there are a ton of beautiful/handsome characters of all races/genders there.
Oddly, I think the base dwarven females are the best looking women, though it's harder to really improve them. Humans are the easiest to make really good looking. In particular, I find spending time with the cheek/jaw settings makes a big difference.

I wouldn't compare DA and Oblivion, really. None of my DA characters took very long and I think they look pretty cute. With my Oblivion Imperial, it took me forever to make her look decent.

I tried to make my character somewhat close to a Dragon Age elf but with a hint of a Baldur's Gate elf
