Can you safely ditch rogues in nightmare mode?

In hard mode i felt the only skill rogues had, were being dead.

I built my Hawke as a DW melee rogue, but ended up only playing Fenris as 2-H vanguard warrior and controlling mages. Also Isabella was part of my team cause i wanted to romance her, but she - aswell as my Hawke - the second you dont control them, they end up dead.

I feel rogues are decent singletarget damage dealers, however 99% of all the battles in the game are MASSIVE ZERG FESTS and thus i feel a rogue isnt really bringing anything to the table.

Thoughts, advice?

You can safely ditch rogues, I played a few missions in Act 1 with a 2h warrior and 3 mages. The only thing that will be impossible is disabling traps and opening chests, but there are not a lot of those, and if you REALLY can't live without that loot you can usually take a rogue to open those chests later. That said, Varric is actually pretty useful at keeping your mages alive, and has decent DPS.

Cheers :)

Yes varric is decent, because he is the only real ranged rogue and he has AOE. He is particulary usefull as an anti-archer - archer.

When i played through the game on hard i felt like Fenris and Anders duo`ed it. In most fights melee rogues ended up being cannon fodder only.

For me the best thing rogues can do is manage aggro on your squishies. DPS is sort of secondary.

I haven't had this experience with my DW rogue Hawke on hard. She's been really versatile, and in my experience I need that single-target dps for a lot of the elite/boss enemies that I've encountered. I can let Fenris attack whatever is closest to him, and have Merril+Anders support him/lay down CC, but generally if I don't have a way to spike down the assassins/revenants/random bosses the rest of my party just falls apart.

My Hawke is specc'd as an AA rogue for the most part, though. As far as I recall, Throw the Gauntlet and Mark of Death are my only actives.

Varric never did anything for me. Even with his totally hax unique sustains, he only did middling damage. As a whole, I don't like the archery tree in DA2. It seems really underwhelming.

Playing on hard still in act 1 having Varric and Isabella in team (myself being 2h reaver ) i must say i struggled till i changed elemental speced Bethany for support Anders.

Looking at damage my warrior surely does it most in first seconds but after blowing his stamina his damage is low. I run around with isabella finishing things and her auto-attack damage is surely best.
I like Varric coz i dont need to control him - he kites thigns himself not like thos mages that will just stand dying ...

I've been finding that as a shield warrior my best party is seb and varric and anders....although bethany worked pretty well too. In Act 1 the game is considerably easier even on the same difficulty, and you soon realize that Isabella, while I like her character, is just unusable.

Fenris is alright for his AoE attacks on very specific fights.

I can't bring Isabella with me, because she dies too quick.
Varric has been useful, but he still dies quick too whenever there is a hoard around him.
I haven't gotten Sebastian yet, hopefully hes better because I need a rogue for trap detecting.
