I'm considering buying a new laptop, purely for the sake of running DA unchoppy. It's that kind of game. To that end, a few questions.

Mostly i'm curious if the new windows actually is faster than Vista, and if it makes a meaningful difference for gaming. Anyone know?

Secondly, if anyone can recommend some GOOD graphic cards for running on high settings with no lag, that would be nice too although i will be looking into it myself as well.

I haven't used it myself, but I've heard (from friends) that it runs games like crap. A lot of crashes and bad performance apparently (take that for it's worth, my FRIENDS words, not my own).

Well i have a pc and it has 2.6ghz core2duo and 512mb 8800gtx and 4gb 800mhz ram .Game runs perfect with the highest settings and 8x aa.But after aroun 4 - 5 hours of gameplay it starts to have higher loading times. With a laptop i dont think you will be able to play that long tho because the game will eat thru your battery in notime :D.And im using windows 7 and it works a lot better than vista for me.

Win7 is new, so it's going to have issues for a while. Some people report it's better (because, fundamentally, it is), but some people report problems because it doesn't work as well with all hardware as it will 6-8 months from now.

That slowing with long playtimes appears to be a constant across all Windows versions. DAO seems to have a slow memory leak (which I admit I've only barely noticed).

You're probably safe either way. Choose your OS based on other criteria (I continue to use Vista because I managed to make vanilla Baldur's Gate run on it, and I'm not confident I could do the same in Win7).

Although Windows 7 isn't that much of an improvement over Vista on higher end systems (they share the same code base), it is optimized. If you have to choose between the two, go with 7. If you already have Vista running decently, I don't think 7 is worth the price of upgrade.

Haven't had issues with Win7 yet. Really though, unless you see a thousand threads screaming bloody murder about OS problems it's going to mostly boil down to whether your particular hardware configuration/OS combination just happens to rub the game the wrong way. It's an arcane art.

Win7 is alot more optimised and will run better , the results will be less notticeable on powerfull systems however. Think of it this way , Vista is your common BMW car , and Win7 is were they have taken messures to make the car lighter for better performance without removing features.

For me personaly I've not seen any reson not to upgrade to windows 7 save if you cannot afford it.

Well, I can confirm that your friends are talking out of their asses. I have had 7 for weeks now and all games run perfectly.

Generally speaking when buying a new PC/Laptop you should go for the newest operating system especially If your getting a mid to high end system.

Also if your looking at a gaming machine cost/performance would suggest a Desktop and not a laptop.

Depends on how deep your pockets are of course.

I've been using Win7 since Beta (and Vista since beta before that) and can tell you it is well worth the upgrade. Win7 is what Vista was meant to be. You'd be a fool to pass it up.

As for those "friends" who have had constant crashes.... I don't know what they're doing but I've not had a single problem on my 64 bit gaming box, my 32 bit communications box and my laptop.

Enjoy.

Edit: Oh and definitely go for a desktop for gaming.  Even the most powerful laptops can't compete with the experience you'll get.

Win7 comes as default around here by now, so this is all very reassuring. Just wanted to check i wasn't throwing my money away.

As for desktops, that's not an option for me. I move around a lot, will be doing it a ton more pretty soon, and i want my stuff with me wherever i go.

I like 7 better than Vista, but it's not all roses. Here are some examples:

Knights of the Old Republic crashes frequently under 7 x64. Might be a problem specific to certain computers, (KotOR users installing KotOR through Steam aren't reporting this issue, but disk version users are) and this issue wasn't occurring last week when this hardware was running Vista x64, or two months ago when it was running x86 XP Pro SP3.

Borderlands ran at higher FPS under x64 Vista Ultimate SP1 than it does under x64 7. Might be drivers. Doesn't really matter to me what specific bit of tech is causing the drop in performance, as the bottom line is the game ran better under Vista.

Civilization IV Beyond the Sword patcher fails to patch anything from the in-game update option. It will download the patch file, but fails (silently) to do any actual game file updating. Have to DL the stand-alone patch and run that separately. Problem doesn't occur under Vista, even though 7 is only a little bit more confounding and obfuscated with respect to hiding program data and user profile files/paths than Vista.

Sid Meier's Railroads! crashes frequently under 7. No other information yet as the 7 or 8 people still playing that buggy game are still trying to sort out why it's worse under 7 than it was under Vista.

I've been using Win7 since the RC came out and I'm now on a retail Ultimate 64x and I can say Win7 is just 100% better than Vista. Vanilla Vista that is.

IF you already have Vista + Service Packs you probabaly won't notice a lot of difference performance wise. But "feel" wise, it's a load better.

Only problem I've encountered so far was when I had my North Bridge drivers installed I'd get like 2 BSOD's a day, my mobo is a 790GX chipset and it seems it's just a ****. No drivers, no problems.

You and your 'friends', know sh!t.

I changed from Vista to W7 when the beta version came out, and it's night and day.  Don't comment on stuff you clearly know zero about, sunshine.

The majority of Windows 7 based issue is all due to the cunning way they've hidden a lot of system-based functions to the average user. While good in some way, and better for security, it can be a pain in the rear if you actually know what you're doing and not being allowed to do it.

Unless you go all out and change the way the OS gives permissions, you're not going to have control or access over every part of your computer. Most of the crashing is actually caused by "Start as Administrator" problems as the game tries to access a file that Windows 7 doesn't think it should be doing for some reason. The problem will be ironed out eventually, just like it was with Vista.

My personal experience is probably biased. When I upgraded to Windows 7 I also installed a considerable amount more RAM on this machine and switched over to x64. So far I haven't had any problems as long as I remember to right-click, and "Start as Administrator", which as an administrator, I really shouldn't have to do :P

Been using W7x64 Ultimate since it was officially released - works great, much less problems than I had with Vista.

But I would not recommend purchasing a laptop for gaming at all unless you've got money to burn and nothing better to spend it on. You get much more bang for your buck with a desktop + it's upgradable. Remember if you chose to have more than 4Gb (3 + change, really) memory in your computer you need a 64-bit operating system.

Are you blind? I said my friends had told me it wasn't running games well (namely World of Warcraft and a few other titles) and they were continually getting CTDs.

I never said it was my OWN opinion or stating I knew better then he himself, I was simply giving him the input of my friends and told him to take it for what it's worth.

Perhaps if you weren't so far up your own arse that you feel the need to put others down on the net you wouldn't feel so defensive over an operating system.

Really? What resolution?

I have a 3.2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 896mb GTX 260 (770 core/1260 memory /1680 shader) and 4gb 800mhz ram and I get 25 fps at high setting with 2x aa @ 1920x1200.

I'm on Windows 7 RC1.

+1 for windows 7

The OS footprint is significantly smaller than vistas = more resources for games etc.

DA certainly works very nicely under 7 for me, its not crashed once.

I think Win 7 is slightly better than Vista in gaming, but it's pretty neglible. Otherwise it's more sleak and tuned than Vista. XP is still dx9 gamers choice.

My 2 cents! When Vista came out of the running blocks, it was horrible! But those problems are pretty much a thing of the past. I use Vista Ultimate 64-Bit and it runs like a champ. Games, everything, no hiccups, no lock ups, no BSOD!

I'm sure 7 is "going" to be the better OS down the road. It is to soon to call that game yet.

Bottom line, if you have already have a PC with Vista on it and it's running fine, stick with Vista! If your buying a new PC, get it with 7. Persoanlly, I will not pay the $200.00 upgrade price to move from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate. Heck it was just 3 years ago when I bought Vista for $300.00 plus dollars and my bang for the buck has not yet gone bang! But than again, if you have a bunch of money that is burning a hole in your pocket, go get 7!

Heck there was a time, like 3 years ago, when I always bought the new OS on day 1, but I have gotten wiser, and the first 6-9 months you'll usually pull your hair out. Heck it's like your an advanced Beta Tester. So I'll wait and let some other guy go through all of the reinstalls and compatiablity issues and programs that crash or don't work, no I'll stick with Vista 64 for the time being!

Hope that helped ~~ Gunny Image IPB

Another thing some of you reminded me of. 64 vs 32?

My current laptop is running Vista 32, so i'm thinking keep it around for older stuff and get 7 64 on the new one? Or does DA run better on 7 32?
