There is a lot of comparison with Vista here, and no doubt about it, 7 is better than Vista. But as someone who has been using XP for about 7 years, 7 was a little frustrating for me as there are certain new features which cannot be turned back to how they were in XP.

Personally I feel 7 is more stable than my XP was, for some reason my ATi 3870 was making XP crash a lot, but on 7 it's stable. Speedwise I felt no increase compared to XP, in fact, sometimes 7 feels a tad slower, but it might just be because I am trying to compare too hard.

For someone without neither Vista or 7, an upgrade from XP is forcibly needed, Microsoft really wants to phase XP out. And as a gamer you'll want it for the DX11 support, but until some DX11 games comes out, that isn't really needed, but you might as well start sooner than later.

Edit: I know this thread was about Vista vs 7, but what I was trying to say was, how you'll look better if you stand next to someone ugly, it's the same thing with 7 I think, everyone compares it with Vista, and of course 7 will be super amazing then, but I don't think 7 is that amazing really. There is nothing I've gained by "upgrading" to 7 from XP, besides DX11, I find none of the new "features" of any use.

If you're getting something new, go for 7.

If you've already got a machine with Vista or even XP, you might as well hang on to it until you'd be reformatting anyway - 7 is better than both, but not so much better that it's worth going through the hassle of buying a copy and reinstalling all your programs for.

I won't go into much detail, but I will say that I've been running Windows 7 since late September and the only problem that I've had yet was Intel's terrible "Matrix Storage" RAID controller falsely detecting one of my disks as bad. Repeatedly. But that's not the fault of Windows 7! I switched from Windows XP, so it took me a while to get used to a lot of the new features, but now I actually like it. That's... weird. The new taskbar is great! Plus, games run perfectly. At least, WoW, NWN2, and DA:O do. I haven't tried others, yet.
