This is how it should be.
Getting influenced by other work is fine, but making the same game as other is dumb, i don't care about the sale, it's about creativity.
If games just copy/paste aspect of other games, then creativity is diyng, and letting evolve the tech doesn't compensate for a ****y story already seen 5 times a years, or a rotten gameplay used in 15% of the game released this year.
Learn from other, don't copy them, put your touch, your interpretation and your passion.
If there is no surprise, then it's a fail, not mater how awsome the graphic are.
To be clear, ME3 should not be like GOW3 because it's already done.
Make it better, make it different, never make the same as other.
Making video games is not like buyng chocolate in a supermarket.
If you like fantasy book, do you want all your books to have the same story, same characters, same plot and twist, same story telling? It would be ridiculous.
Asking ME3 to be like GOW3 because you liked is selfish in a way.
When you find a game you like it's always great, but people shouldn't be afraid that every games they expect to buy should be the same in order to not be decived.
Some games can be very good surprise more than expected, because it's different and well made.
Because X game is a very good shooter does it mean that every shooter that are not like X is bad? definitly not, one day you discover Y shooter and you can love it.
There is never 1 good way to make a good product.
