I've come across several weapons with the added attribute of "Messy Kills." What exactly does this mean? I assume it just makes most enemies explode in blood/gore but is there actually any bonus or gameplay mechanic behind it? I checked the guide and I didn't see it mention this anywhere.

think its a high chance that on death they explode. Or there's extra blood. Or both. Maybe that it sets it to a 100% chance even a normal kill will cause an enemy to blow up.
Not entirely sure though.

I'm aware of they way it was in DA:O. It was a chance to do a special killing blow but in DA2 most of the enemies I kill with my bow literally explode anyway. I guess I could just waste the gold and buy one to test it out.

They 'explode' instead of a special kill in DA2 anytime you kill them with excessive damage. So critting when they're at like 5% hp (and that far exceeds 0hp). Messy kills I think just auto-triggers it even if you kill them with -1 hp.
Its flavor not some kind of useful combat stat, same as DAO.
