I can't decide on who I disliked like the most. They would have to be: Isabella, Fenris, and Anders/Justice. Isabella is just a simple-minded skank, nothing less. On my first dialogue with Fenris, I knew I wouldn't like him. Nothing worse than an emo ruining all my party's fun. Anders was okay, but he changed too much from awakening. Greg did a much better job then whatever his name was. His mood in general was one of the reasons I changed to a no-healer party.

Justice ....because he changed Anders...I want my catloving, funny and egoistic Anders form Awakening back! I hope there will be a way to separate the two again.

Anders. First game I decided to romance him. Deleted the game early on in Act 2 because I was disgusted with myself. Just thinking about it makes me feel dirty.

Hate:
My least favorite is Carver. There's just no way to help that a-hole brother of yours, kind of wish I took him to the Deep Roads so that he could die. Loving Bethany though! Carver is followed by Sebastian who's only purpose in the game it seems is to give you an extra scene with Leliana and get to know the Grand Cleric more. I don't mind plot device characters, but kinda sad I payed money for him. Thats followed by Anders who I only used as few times as possible. The urge to kill him at the end was only tempered by the fact that I would rather lose Sebastian than my only healer.

Neutral:
I love Isabella's banter and what not but after the clinic scene with Anders... ewwww... After that she still keeps on hitting on anything and everyone. I hope Fenris' magic resistance applies to STD's.

I started off not liking Fenris, but if you get friendly with him at least he comes around at the end. If you pay attention he's not totally one dimensional. Too anime-like for me in the end. Never felt like he fit in the setting, unless all of Tevinter is more like a Final Fantasy kingdom than the grittier feel of Ferelden and Kirkwall.

Love:
I love Varric. I mean he's reason enough to play the game. That and the fact that we don't how much of our perception of things are warped by his telling of the story. His banter is top notch and he's the most useful rogue in the game (assuming you don't play one yourself).

I also love Aveline. Sure she's tough and may conflict with some of your less savory choices but she actually grows in the game. In my mage play through I felt like I lost a little sister but gained a big one.

Merrill at first didn't appeal to me but between her banter, the way the others treated her, and just her story I really grew to like her. Her romance is almost a little too sweet, but then again by Act 3 you've been living together for 3 years so it gives a feel of comfort more than romantic I guess. I've said it before, Merrill is basically the DA version of Tali. I just wonder what happened to her Elluvian. One minute it's there, then when you complete her quest it just disappears.

Carver. Whining little...$#*%. But if you don't count him, I would have to say Anders. His Healing branch is pathetic and his Vengeance branch guarantees he will die.

Sebastian. I don't hate him, I just don't find him very interesting considering how little impact he has (well, up until the end of Act III, I suppose). Gameplay-wise, I prefer Varric over him.

He serves as a fine dust-collector in every single one of my playthroughs as of this date.

On another note, even when taking my above statements in mind;

Daryl_A wrote...
That said, as a whole, I like them far more than the DA:O band.

First, Carver. All he does is **** and complain about this and that and being the second child, and being in your shadow, BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!
Second, Sebastion. Let's just say, I am SO ****ign tired of the self-righteous bull****.
Third Fenris. Sure, he LOOKS awesome, and if I was into guys I might even go after him, but he is a complete ASS toward Mages. I love mages. I've done 4 playthoughs and I still havn't had the heart to side with the Templars yet to get those 2 achievements.
And finally, fourth, Anders. I LOVED him in Awakening, but he changed SO MUCH from the hilarious party member. I miss the old Anders, Justice-Turned-Vengeance changed him too much.

My least favorite has to be Anders. His weird obsession with my Hawke just annoyed me to no end and then the end of the game came about...

I hate Fenris for the simple reason that he hates all mages. Sure, he had a hard life, but he was in the Tevinter Imperium, whaddaya expect? It treats elves even worse than Meredith and that nut Ser Alrik (who wants to make all mages Tranquil, forgetting that mages ARE a vital part of a country's defenses). He says to my mage character (after trying to get through to him not all mages are Tevinter Magistars) something like "you're a halfway decent sort. I didn't expect that from a mage." Doesn't change his opinion on mages though. One thing about him, his rivalary bonus is better than his friendship bonus...

Don't have much experience with Isabella. Sure, she's superior in combat effectiveness to Varric, atleast until his act 3 companion quest and you give him the shard, bringing Bianca's rune slots up to 4 (and socketed with 4 runes of impact give a whopping +100 damage to an alreay 150 base damage), but Varric is in my party for story reasons...

Only played through (and haven't actually completed the game yet) as a mage, so I have little experience with Bethany, but Carver was a decent sort. Sure, he felt like he was in his brother's shadow (and I'd have to concur, I mean, you ARE th main character, EVERYONE is in your shadow), but he should have looked on the bright side. He was the only normal in a family of mages. That made him unique.

I hated Anders as well. Bioware completely butchered him. And then in his first conversation with him, he comes on to you, and if you turn him down, you get a big rivalary increase. Not to mention the fact that he wanted to destroy the Circle. Despite the problems, the Circle does provide SOME benefits. Magical research (atleast what little research that is allowed by the Chantry, that is) is easier, it probably houses a repository of information (remember, Irvine even had Flemeth's Grimiore), and it does make magical training easier and more cohesive. I tried to role-play my mage as a mage that lacked a formal magical education, with a lot of rough spots, but that's hard in a CRPG)

On the flip side, I loved Varric, Aveline, and Marril. I thought that ditzy elf Marril was cool, and she has some funny stuff with Varric. Aveline decided (to me alteast) that after she lost her husband, the only thing she has is her job, so she should do the best she can. My only about her gripe is yet one of the many bugs that got through the beta testing (was there any? this game makes the release version of KOTOR2 look sleek and polished in comparison) where she complains that you sold her husband's shield. I had read about it, and even tried avoiding it (I didn't even put it in my storage chest, because even that triggers the bug). No luck. She still accused me of selling her shield, even though it was the only peice of armor I had unequipped. It's a nice shield, but it DOES get out classed pretty quickly. Varric is cool. He's funny, and he knows how to drive a story foward.

I disliked Fenris. From an RPG standpoint he spoke like a Dalish minus using Elvahn. He's a slave yet for some reason they decided to tatoo him with Lyrium to 'siphon off power' yet when he's no longer being drained he doesn't go crazy like everyone else. He's also extremely predictable. From a combat standpoint he's more uselesss than a doorknob on a bra. You've got Avelaine as a tank, why do ou want a two handed swrodsman running around when you can use a rogue or a mage?

I see people saying 'Carver' but when I play he's aced in the first five minutes of the game. So... whatever.

My second least fave is Isabella because I play rogues so I'd rather leave her out and in RPG her basic role seems to be to flirt with anything that breathes... and then she betrayed me and I got to see 'Shadow Isabella' on the selection screen to constantly taunt me with 'She's alive but you can't pick her'

I see a lot of Anders bashing but I actually liked him. He has character progression throughout if you use him. And if you constantly joke with him he'll sometimes come around a little bit. The character's role, overall, made a lot of sense.

Merril has to be my favorite character. The whole 'Ok I'll shut up now I'm babbling' at first is endearing and made me laugh. She, too, grows more than any other character if you keep her around. This also depends on choices made, I am sure. The pride demon storyline was exquisite.

Dislike
Anders: Anders was too one dimensional and I really felt that he was just a dead weight, sprouting off a lot of nonsense that I really got tired of hearing very quickly. The fact that he is the only healer in a non-mage Hawke game is just annoying. In the end I was glad that I got to kill him, because I really couldn't stand to look at him after his actions. I just wish you had been able to kill him before he became a mass murderer. :(
Carver: I've rarely seen a more annoying brother. He just kept whining and whining and whining for no reason. Just by saying Hello to Aveline in the first scene, he got all rivalry. To betray his siblings (even if one is dead) by joining the templars is just ugh. One more reason to support the mages at least!

Neutral:
Isabela: I liked much of Isabela's banter and her flirting. Sometimes she seems a bit shallow (very), but there are times where she shows weaknesses and you hear more about how come she has adapted that personality. She would have been in the Likes if it hadn't been because of her betrayal of you. She could have prevented a lot of needless deaths if she had handed over the artifact!
Fenris: Fenris is quite an emo prettyboy. He is very opposed to mages, which is fine at the beginning, but then it just grows annoying. He does have a compelling background story though and being betrayed by his sister is just sad.
Varric: Varric had potential to be a great character, but in reality he is one of the most bland characters in the game. Sure he has some great banter and some interesting conversations, but he really lacks a lot of opinion of his own, only rarely taking a stand on anything. Of course since he's your only Rogue (other than Isabella who will leave you for a while, possibly the rest of the game and Sebastian that you only get after act 1 and only if you have the DLC), I guess that might be necessary, but still it makes him seem like he's really not caring what happens at all with the world.
Sebastian: Interesting background story, great looks, he's got a lot going for him. On the other hand he is perhaps a bit too self-righreous at some points. It is kinda sad that he only seem to be to the extremes, not a middle road.

Like
Aveline: Aveline is just a great character. She loses her husband, but moves on with life, eventually finding another man. She has honour, integrity, strength of character and is the pillar of support that none of the other characters can be, because she has been there from the start and knows how hard it is to lose. I only wish that my male Hawke could have romanced her, because she is really the only woman in the game that could be his soul mate (Isabela too shallow and Merrill comes off as too naive).
Merrill: I was actually surprised by this character. Starting out she did seem a lot like a naive girl with no idea what she was doing, but as the game advance, she grows on you. A lot. Oh, she does blood magic, but unlike most other blood mages, she is capable of remaining good at heart. She is the light that shows you that blood magic in itself is not evil, it is the practitioner of it.
Bethany: Your sweet little sister, taken from you by the templars and forced into the Circle. She seems to agree to most of your decisions, but this is because you are the older sibling, the one she idolizes. She's just the type of sister that you cannot dislike at all, because you know she'd do anything for you, so you'll do everything for her. Without her it would be easier picking a side in the end game.

Anders, hands down. Wich is kind of sad, since I loved his character a lot in Awakening. They just ruined him from top to bottom, it was like he isn't even the same person anymore. If you had told me before this game came out, that in DA2 I would have to choice to kill Anders, I would have said no way. Stabbing him in the back was by far the best moment in the entire game.

Carver, Fenris, and Sebastien for me as well. and for similar reasons.
Carver just seemed to whine too much about his plight without doing anything about it, even when eh went to join the templars he just switched being stuck in Hawke's shadow to being stuck in... every single other templar's shadow.

Sebastien just struck me as a whiney, boring, watered down version of Varric. My dislike of him is more from a practical than personal standpoint, I just didn't need him when I had Varric; who did more dps via Bianca AND kept me entertained. Him opting to run off to starkhaven rather than fight Hawke was about the only smart thing he did in any of my playthroughs.

aand Fenris..the brooding wonder. he's acrtually kinda borderline for the simple reason that I didn't use him often enough to care. Him and Aveline arr similar in that on two of my playthroughs I just couldn't find room in my party to use them. Even so, his opinion of mages just seemed a bit too black and white for my liking, and his decision to side with the templars at the end of my mage playthrough made me laugh."Didn't you hear Varric say messing with us was suicidal? Hell, you've SEEN what I can do and you wanna fight me on principle?" might be due to my friend/rival scale but he only ever seemed able to see one side of any story.

Can't stand

Anders. I really really really can't stand the guy, and I HATE it that I am sort dependent on him if I want a healer. I like to play a warrior, tend to play Hard and try nightmare...I hate how he looks, dresses, sounds, I hate it when he talks, comments blah blah. What a tool!

Neutral

Aveline: i really don't dislike her per se, I just resent that she is the only REAL dedicated tank. It makes me feel like i am being forced to use X. It just rubs me wrong.

I am also sort of Neutral on Sebastion and Varric. I think they are both pretty powerful ranged attackers. They both can get the job done in that department.

Like:
Merrill, Isabella and Fenris. I like these guys best. i swap out characters all the time as I play generally, but my next play through will probably be with those three as a dedicated party.

id say fenris, he gets real annoying about how much he hates the mages and how he thinks theyre all corrupt.

second would be aveline, shes just too uptight about everything.

last would be carver, he is such a downer and wont stop cring about how he is in big brothers shadow.
