In Dragon Age: Origins, I could play through as a Rogue, Warrior, or Mage, and be fine on the Nightmare difficulty - in part due to knowing the layout, what's coming, positioning etc... But am struggling a little on Hard Mode in Dragon Age 2. Played on Normal (with a Rogue), found it too easy, in all but a few spots, so I decided to start again with a Mage (similar to what I'd constantly play in Origins) but found myself overwhelmed by the Ogre fight, and being swarmed with multiple Darkspawn at the time.
This leads to my shortcomings at this, and a lot of other RPG-style games in prioritising the early game skills while I'm still figuring out the basic gameplay (moving around, avoiding AoE attacks etc). Give me LV20, and I'll be comfortable with a Warrior, a Rogue or a Mage in terms of my general build, for both Hawke, and the companions.
So, I'm looking for some general tips on prioritising the early game, so I don't feel quite so overwhelmed by so many enemies... as an example, with my Mage Hawke I started with the Primal tree, knowing that I'd want to build up to Galvanism and took Stonefist, and Chain Lightning... But should I have taken Rock Armor for example? Or while a little later in the game (but still lower levels) is it worth branching out of the Primal school early to start working on Creation with Heroic Aura and over to Haste, or Barrior in Arcane etc. (The type of things by LV20 I'd likely build towards) Or continue with Primal with the exception of rushing to Unshakable at LV8 in Force Mage etc.
Obviously this is just an example, I have similar issues in prioritising my companions as well, focusing on the Bianca line for Varric, or Marksman from LV7, when/if to branch out into Scoundrel/Sabotage etc. While I definitely enjoy the sheer volume of options, as I mentioned, I do feel a little overwhelmed in the earlier stages.
Secondly, just to ask for a little advice either way - I'm strongly finding I dislike the new "wave" mechanic of combat... One of the things I enjoyed was knowing what was where in Origins and designing a set of tactics/strategy to overcome the enemies... Any hints on how to continue doing that, knowing that there's a very good chance, after dealing with the first wave, my Rogue/Mages will be the instant target of many characters in the second wave, since Taunt generally hasn't finished its cooldown?
Apprishiate any help, while I eventually found Nightmare on Origins to be easy, I'm still working at building up to a Nightmare playthrough on this, as it feels a lot more challenging, and worthwhile to complete, then rushing through on Normal.
Priorities? (General Help)

I'm starting another playthrough with a mage too. My plan is that that the first priority should be a few hard hitting spells. Grab an AOE, but mostly a couple single target abilities. Focus on direct offensive spells rather than defense early on, but remember that your mana pool is limited at the start.
Support or percentage based abilities should come later in my opinion.
