Topic...I'm at the start of act 2 and I was wondering if I would have enough time to get Merrill's rivalry up - she's still somewhere near the middle.

Just keep listioning to reason and don't give in to her insane personal quest and you'll get that rivalry.

Lol, is it worth seeing the "friendship" side of her story at least once? I'm playing a Blood Mage (not evil, though...) Hawke so I would feel kind of like a hypocrite for yelling at Merrill about Blood Magic.

I played the friendship side of her story (gave her the mirror piece, took her to Sundermount for the final confrontation with the demon) and while the personal tragedy at the end was horribly poignant. in the final analysis it actually wasn't Merrill's fault. Had her plan gone to completion without interference, she'd very likely have destroyed herself, but Merrill knew that risk and accepted it. She didn't ask someone else to unilaterally take the price upon themself, or for the consequences to snowball out to mass death.

Then again, I'm not objective on the Merrill topic.

Me, I don't know what the Rivalry side looks like; how does it go?

I got a nice -25 for telling her to sod off with her mirror. I find her to be a complete nit-wit, and my Hawk doesn't have the patience for her, so she is always rude.

I was nice with Merrill, I got her the mirror piece for her first quest, but I didn't take her to Sundermount to summon the demon.

You would be more than kind of a hypocrite... you would be absolutely a hypocrite. That's exactly what Merrill is... a Blood Mage who has good intentions. Chastising her for doing exactly what you're doing would be way out of character in my opinion.

I was super nice to her, since she was my love interest, but I also flat out refused to help her down her dark path. She ended up with full friendship even though I took her piece of the mirror and made her feel awful about her blood magic.

Which reminds me. The Blood Mage spec NEEDs special dialogue in the game. I would love being confronted for using blood magic.

Least there are plenty of options to make deals with demons in this game.

I agree with this completely. I had a Friendship with Merrill, and I understood her desire to reclaim a part of her people's history.

The only reason I helped Merril rebuild that blasted mirror was because I was hoping it would have something to do with Morrigan and the Eluvian in Witchunt. How wrong I was.

I just want to see my beloved in all her graphically redesigned glory. They made Flemeth look sexy in DAII and I can only imagine how HOT Morrigan must be now.

I liked her personality and accent. But her naive perspective on the world and overconfidence in her abilities coupled with her obssession over an obviously evil artifact and treacherous demons promise was just reeeeedunculous.

What's even more ridiculous is that your entire party does nothing about it except give her a good scolding. I mean, hello? If I were Hawke I'd knock Merrill out and dump that thing into the ocean.

She was unfamiliar with human culture because it was completely alien to her, but she knew the risks involved with the demon, and wanted to make the attempt because she felt it was worth it if it would allow her to reclaim a part of her people's history.

She knew the risks but she didn't take them seriously.

So baisically she's Branka, they both want to reaquire some part of their people's history and are perfectly fine with paying any price, would love to see how people would feel about Merrill if she willingly tried to sacrifice Hawke and the others...oooooh wait she was willing :D.

Arguably its entirely the Keepers fault here. She went way the hell out of her way to coddle and protect Merrill from the consequences of her decisions and didn't even tell her about it. I mean, from Merrill's perspective she dealt with demons... and nothing bad happened at all. Hell there are a lot of places in game you can deal with demons with no ill consequences, so she's not entirely wrong at all.

Merrill's only real issue is that shes unsure of her limits... which is why she brings Hawke along to kill her. The mirror is basically all she has left besides Hawke's group, and I don't blame her for what she does.

I felt sorry for her, but she kind of deserved what she got. She assumed that playing around with dangerous magic would only destroy her life, and that assumption ended up costing her everything. Anders was totally justified when he said that the world was poorer with her in it. I mean I liked some aspects of her character, but I told her over and over that she was playing a dangerous game and she didn't listen.

You have a point. Its one thing for a keeper to force Merril to kill her to prove a point. Its another to get the whole clan slaughtered because of on foolish elf girl. But I wonder if she knew  teaching merril this lesson would cost more then just her own life.

There's a way to only kill the demon/keeper, when you are confrunted by the clan say the "it's my fault" line.
