Hey Guys,

I played origins on normal and completed it ok but i did have to have my witts about me in the harder encounters. It was just about perfect for my level of skill.

In DA2 im not good enough to play hard in DA2, i can get past the first ogre but by the time i get to Kirkwall im out of potions (and as you cant seem to buy them) i cant even do the encounter at the front gates. Problem is easy is an absolute cake walk!

Seems to be a big golf between the two difficulty levels for me. So any general tips for playing on hard early on?

Thanks chaps

Depends on your class I suppose? Besides kiting a low health player during the 'real' ogre, I also picked healing for my mage(saves on potions to be sure)

I'm on hard myself and to my eternal shame I switched to casual in the rock wraith encounter, because I raged at the massively stacked odds(and how bloody long it took to take a sniff of health off the thing). Since that encounter I realised that just about every boss encounter will be ridiculously stacked against you if you play at Hard or higher.

edited in thoughts :

*later game spoilers*

If you go one on one with the Arishok I suggest setting aside 20~ minutes of your time. I was a 2h warrior and the thing took a bajillion hits before his health went anywhere and THEN he uses potions *insert rageguy pic here*.

Boss fights are ridiculous so far as I'm concerned, they take far too long and have ridiculous conditions with them (High dragon summoning dragonlings and being invulnerable while they're around), Saarebas*not bosses* who teleport and use black holes to tear your party up(not so much of a problem later game), certain boss characters who do not lose any health until minions are killed.

Thanks for you 5 cents, sounds like the bosses are going to destroy me :-)

I've got a little further now but still only done normal encounters. the rogues on hard are nasty little gits!!

I'm playing warrior and have bethany, varric and aveline at the minute... trying for the DLC character first.

Your party setup needs to be perfect. Aveline is a must, unless your Hawke is a tank. Besides that a 2h warrior is crucial in every encounter as each boss or sub boss has at least 2 wave of mobs. Keep your Mage WELL AWAY from the fight as she will suffer knockback on every friggin hit, that being said she (or Anders) will be vital for healing.

Thanks Ushae, so for Bethany is the healing talent tree he best to go for? So far i've been putting points into elemental (shes only level 5-6 at the moment).

I'd advise you to work on Anders if you want a healing mage.

Oh hard, don't worry about it, you DO NOT need ideal party setup. Early game might be alittle hard, but you can get through it with alot of kiting. Try to limit health pot use in the Ogre battle to 1~2. Use Aveline to tank the darkspawns and Bethany (or yourself as mage) to kite the Ogre around the battle field. Once Aveline and whoever else clean up the adds then have everyone focus on Ogre. The battle at the gate is also pretty easy if you just run away when the fight starts. Let the Captain tank the mobs and you can just pick off the archers. Same goes for the fight with fredrich. Pull them all to the guards and let the NPC tank.

Always try to use corner, doors to pull enemy into a big cluster and then spam AOE, imo, that's usually the easiest way to get through hard & nightmare. If you've registered the game. You should have the Boot of Frozen Waste. Put a Cold Resist rune in there and a point in Elemental Aegis, you can easily achieve 100% cold resistance for your Warrior. After that it's just a matter of spamming Cone of Cold like there's no tommorow.

I'm almost done with my hard run.
My party set up for most of the game has been Fenris, Varric, and Anders (and myself, force/blood mage, no heal spell). So, you don't need Aveline (though I turned the difficulty down for most bosses, notes below).

Merril is very effective with her debuff spells. I subbed her for Varric a few times and was pleased. I had to keep Varric though because I spaz if I can't pick every lock in the game.

Bosses are disproportionately hard.

As far as regular enemies, there are a few times I had trouble:
Early game night time ambushes: These become trivial as you get more abilities, but early on they were really rough.

Some random encounters: There were a few (3 or 4) groups in the game I had heaps of trouble with. Most of these can be solved by just backpedaling into a corner or doorway and using your tank as a wall, and spamming AoE spells.

Assassins and Qunari mages (Saarebas): Assassins will ravage your rogues and casters. Control or burn them quickly. Saarebas are just brutal and need to die as soon as they spawn. Same with blood mages. They will one shot your entire party with a single spell.

** BOSS SPOILERS **

Ancient Rock Wraith: Fight is brutally unfair. Turned to normal, and it was the perfect difficulty level.

High Dragon: Very hard. Hated the fight. Turned to casual to get it over with, could have done normal, probably could have done hard if I'd kept trying.

Arishok: UGH. Could have done hard but it would have taken an hour (literally, 60 minutes). Turned to casual to get it over with. Fight is a cheesefest. I did the 1-on-1 duel, btw.

"Secret" Pride Demon: Turned to casual to get it over with (see High Dragon). Could have done normal, "hard" was pushing it, mostly because I got overwhelmed with spawns. This isn't to be confused with the Merril pride demon, who was a pushover.

Varterral: Pwned his face on hard.

Thanks guys, getting the hang of it now. As you say gets a bit easier as you go (i did have to go to normal for the templar fight when going into the chantry with Anders though!)

The beginning of most RPGs are frustrating on harder difficulties. But once you get around lvl 9 or 10 along with having your ideal members (up to you), the game becomes a breeze outside of elites, mini-bosses and story-based fights.

I'm also playing on Hard. I have zero dragon age experience prior to this game. I can get through most parts, but some of the boss fights I feel are pretty imbalanced. My problem is I think is that I have Hawke as a tank (because i love sword and shield). So now with Aveline, I'm running 2 tanks, Varric, and Bethany. I feel that my party just has 0 damage, the shorter fights are easier but the longer fights are almost impossible because of running out of stamina/MP
