Anyone else get roflstomped a few times by this guy and his multitude of adds? I have to say in terms of challenges this game does not let up.

Is that the one in the deep roads, because he is ****blocking me big time right now. Granted I probably didn't bring the best class comp with me but my best attempt on hard has been to get him to 1/4 life before Av's dies and he goes nuts on the rest of my group. Av's has a decent amount of fire resist but is getting killed pretty fast anyway.

For me, I checked my companions weapons and realized that they were using the original weapons they started with. changing those out before the battle was the only reason I got passed the dragon in the deep roads.

The High Dragon makes anything in the Deep Roads look like a baby. The fight was epic, but with my normal party I didn't have too much trouble with it on normal difficulty. At least, I got through it on my first try. Aveline tanked the dragon like a champ. Dual-weapon rogue Hawke and Primal-focused Merrill dished out the damage, and Anders mostly just attacked with his staff and healed. Pause frequently during add phases to make sure to focus mage fire on any adds that get away from Aveline (or Hawke, who has the defense to survive for a bit).

The hardest thing, for me, was the dragon's fireballs. Anders took a beating from those.

Amazing loot.

The fight was a complete joke. Even on nightmare.

Keep your team add the entrance, stay in a square and dodge breathes.
When she throws fireball, move away to avoid damage.

For the adds, the 1st wave is easy. They should die within 1-2 shots. One DD for the left side, one for the right side.
For the 2nd there spawns 1 big dragon. Let the 3rd character not killing low hp aggro the big dragon and run around in circles.
For the 3rd spawn, there will be 2 big dragons. One spawns fairly early, while the other spawns after all small adds did spawn. So focus the small adds and try to damage the first big drake as much as possible. When the other spawns, let the last character get aggro and run around in circles.

I found it completely impossible to dodge the fireballs on Hard. They always follow me no matter how soon I start running.

You can keep running around in circles to minimize it, but you'll probably get hit occasionally anyway.
Just put fire resistance runes on everyone and you'll pretty much brush it off.

It wasn't a joke, but it wasn't especially hard, either. I managed to beat it on my first try, with a lot of "hold position" work on my ranged fighters and a tank for whenever the dragon was at ground level. Not that different from the strategy I used against the Varterral, Mature Dragons, that demon in the "Pride Unbound" quest, or the final boss fights with Orsino and Meredith. Actually, only Wasp Spiders and that one swarm of demons in the room with the golem's shop really gave me real trouble--this was on normal, of course.

I beat him on my first go though I wasn't exactly ready for him. I found the Mabari War Hound extremely useful in that fight. I lost Anders early so I kept having to go into shield defense mode to improve my defense and last long enough for my health potions to cooldown.

Good fight, better than the ones in DA:O IMO. The adds got a little old though.

It's not a matter of getting hit occasionally, I get hit every single time, even if my party is in constant motion.  They are dodgeable in the solo phase, but in the add phases they become homing missiles and I have found no way to avoid them.  Seeing as no one else has mentioned this, is it a bug?

I had the exact same thing happen to me. She goes up on the ledge and starts launching fireballs at specific targets, and I would run drastically and I specifically watched them curve and swerve directly towards me until they finally found their target. At one point I was running in a circle with one chasing me until it finally landed.

However I believe I heard somewhere that standing just under the ledge where she drops will stop them from hitting you?

hmmmkay. I didn't pay much attention to those because I was focussing on killing the smaller dragons and not really suffering from the fire.
Well if they home on you then they are treated like arrows and there's nothing you can do to dodge them. Maybe a high defense score and/or obscurity could help, though.

Undfortunately no.  I've repeated the fight three times and have been looking for any safe spot in the pit, but haven't found one.  At this point I think I'm just going to give up and go back to the market, buy as much fire resist stuff as I can find, and pass it out to the party.

Runes are helpful, but not too helpful since Anders can't even equip them until Act 3 apparently.

Just practically solo'd the high dragon with Merril on normal, everyone else died early when dragon at 80%+ health. Took near 2 hours though. Bloodmages with high health are ridiculously strong. Burned through about 25 elfroot potions doing it. Actually planned on just playing around with merril after everyone else died, as I had just respec her to blood mage earlier today. Kept staying alive and slowly burnign down the dragons. Surprisingly ended up killing it.

Heh.. this is such a cheap fight.
You can't possibly do it without special adjustments to your party but it's so easy to load your party with 100% fire resistant runes that this fight becomes a complete joke.
My party was:
- Hawke- archer 100% fire resist
- Aveline (knockback/down immunity) 100% resist
- Merrill (Cold/AOE spells) 100% resist
- Anders (healing was hardly needed) no resistance

This is not what I would call a great and challenging level design.
edit: oh it just came to me- I forgot all about the mabari.

Use lots of fire warding runes, this negates any homing fireballs. other than that position your team in the right choke points to lure the adds to an aoe position and cc/tank the big ones. It sucked for me cause I had to swap out my main players since the rune slots on their armor magically vanished (varric and anders) but was still able to pull it off with other companions

I finally beat this by finding one spot where the big momma can't hit you with the homing fireballs. I just parked Anders there, everyone else had enough fire resist to get by.

LOOONG fight, but not difficult if you know what you're doing.
(Hard Difficulty BTW)

Where was this spot? I was referring to it elsewhere, but someone said there is nowhere safe from her fireballs, so I'm curious as to where this is?

There's a thread about it here, I think still on the first page. It's basically the back corner of the arena between two archways.

Give everyone a fire resist rune, and keep Elemental Aegis and Arcane Shield up, should make the fireballs do next to no damage to everyone.

If you can't find it, it's called "High Dragon Blind Spot." You have to be RIGHT up against the wall for it to work.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I had thought someone posted there was a spot you were safe from her fireballs from, but someone told me I was mistaken, so I had doubts. Thanks!

Passed it on my first try, but not before burned through all my health, stamina and mana potions.
had my archer hawke, merrill as my offensive mage, anders as secondary offensive-healer/reviver. and avaline as my tank.

High Dragon this time IS pretty damn easy even on nightmare.

Hawke: 2-handed Reaver, 100% Fire Resistance.
Aveline: Maxed out Guardian Tree, 100% FR.
Sabestian: Maxed out Royal Archer, some points in Archery (enough get hail of arrow and upgrade), rest in Specialist to get Speed and upgrades, Some FR.
Ander: Creation/Arcane tree, no resistance.

Slaps bodyguard on Hawke and keep him around 25% hp at all time, make use of Anders barrier if Hawke got aggro and taunt is down. Haste + Blood Frenzy + Cleave make this fight a complete joke on nightmare.

I walked right into the high dragon not expecting it. I was on my way to the bone pit to do mine massacre. I didn't have any fire runes and stuff so needless to say, it kicked my butt. The fireballs that the dragon spits at you were taking out my party while I was dealing with her dragon babies. I went back to town and am going to get some fire runes plus load up on the fire resist stuff and try this again. I want the achievement!

More like a Low Dragon compared to DAO.
