Wow, it really is hard to read through this whole thread. I only got so far before I couldn't take it anymore. My sense is people posting in this topic are over the age of 20 and upwards to their 40's. First off, it's a game. I think people seem to forget that small fact. Second, each of you are not dealing in "facts". You are dealing in opinions. That's it. You each have an opinion and some happen to agree with one another. Get over it.

My Opinion: Having recently played Two Worlds II and being a long time player of Demon's Souls, I have to say "combat" (if you want to call it that) in DA:O and DA2: demo sucks. It's outright horrid. You're a warrior that cannot use his shield to block attacks (-- it's given this happens). All blocks and attacks are calculated and display the appropriate animation. You have no control over this. There is no looking for an enemy's weakness or striking at the right moment. It's all done with a simulated role of the die -- and it's dull. It's hard to remain engaged when you don't even control your character. All you're required to do is set up the right tactics, engage the enemy, and watch the result. The previous is a true statement -- as long as your party has enough health potions.

Maybe I'm the only one here that wants to be in control of what happens. I want to press a block button. I want to press an attack button. I want to press special attack buttons.
.

First off, I'm 33.  Thanks for making me feel like an old a**hole.
Secondly, this obviously isn't the side of the genre for you.  Its not meant to be an action RPG where you are in direct control of the combat, it comes from the D&D tradition (I guess you weren't born yet) where everything is decided by die-rolls.   In fact, RPG's where you DO have direct control are a relatively new innovation, starting probably with The Elder Scrolls games.
Try learning a little something about the genre and keep your mouth shut untill you're out of puberty.

God this game has put me in a bad mood...

Lol. DA_Joran seems to think there are only four years of age (17,19, 19 and 20) when one's opinion is valid. That's a mighty small window.

I'm a physical therapist. I can assure you that the movements in DA2 are incredibly cheesy, completely unrealistic and even childish. Nothing to do with Kinesiology. I cann't imagine someone over the age of 20-22 to actually like this cheesy combat unless he can suspend disbelief in an admirable way.

The moves in DAO are more closer to reality except the two-handed weapons moves which are bad.

Even if the game is a fantasy game that does not mean that anything goes. There is a small matter called BELIEVABILITY, not realism as some people confuse. DA2 is not realistic neither believable. DAO was not realistic but it was believable {with minor exceptions}.

I find this quote to be absolutely hilarious. Believable with minor exceptions? Firing off arrows quickly, hacking away at an enemy until their healthbar was gone? That's not very believable.. DA:O and DA2 are neither realistic or believable. Ranting and raving about a fantasy game not having realistic or "believable" combat is incredibly ignorant and stupid. Furthermore, I don't believe we need a physical therapist to tell us whether or not combat is realistic.

Disregard anyone under the age of 30 posting in this thread. They know nothing, according to most of the people ****ing.

@damnsalvation I didn't mean to hurt your feelings and  I am familiar with D&D.  Try to relax.  You're too young for a heart attack over a game.

This isn't the genre for us young ones? Ooh. the good old puberty argument. You don't have to be 30 or older to have hit puberty. Your ignorance is disgusting. Just because some of us enjoy DA2 doesn't mean that we only enjoy action rpg's..I thought DA:O was fantastic, but I believe that DA2 was much better.

No, you have to be over 12 to have hit puberty.  If you're over 30 you have both hit, and quit, puberty.
I don't know why you put those other words in my mouth.

Besides, the point was that there are two basic ways to handle combat in an RPG, direct control (which I love) and the more indirect dice-roll mechanic (which I also love).

Where did you get that impression?  I used the age group 20 - 40's.  Someone in the age group you mention (17-20) still have valid opinions.  But, I doubt someone the age of 19 will be a physical therapist without having receiving specialized training. Thus, the age group I used.

All well and good, except for one  thing: the opinions of 17-20 year olds are crap.  I don't mean that as a personal attack, please don't take it as such; I just happen to remember being that age.  Trust me, there is nothing on this earth stupider than a teenager.
In a few short years you'll agree with me.

I had a friend that I convinced to buy DA:O. He never got out of the Tower of Ishal despite the fact that I told him the story picked up after that. Apparently, the combat was too easy and dull. That friend of mine is around my age. And seriously, it's kind of low with the whole ritalin/ADHD/ADD thing. I liked DA:O, and I preferred DA2's combat. This comes from someone who played early RPGs, including the Baldur's Gate series. I've never had a console and have no inclination to get one either. Furthermore, I have a long attention span and do not require ritalin to focus on my tasks. Don't people ever get tired of attacking console users by implying that they're ADD/ADHD? *snort*

Not everyone in that age group is like you were or I was.  When you get older, you will mellow out more and realize half the stuff you're upset about isn't that important.  I'm not gonna state my age for you.  I will tell you I'm older than you are.

REGARDING CONSOLES

I use to play all of my games on PC -- Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Command and Conquer, Neverwinter Nights, Sims 2 .. etc.  I now play games on Playstation 3 and I am much happier.  With PCs, you always have to meet system requirements and that gets to be expensive.  Every other year, you have to update your graphics card or audio card.  With consoles, you don't have that problem.  You have a nice stable platform that developers can program for.  There is no need to go out upgrade components and games tend to work out of the box.  The graphics are comparable to and sometimes better than what is on the PC.  It just depends what platform a game was originally developed for.  Ever since I gave up the chase of having the latest and greatest, I've been happier too.  So, I can't play mods.  I'll live -- trust me.

I've got to same feeling (although with much less passion), so here's a recommendation if you really can't stand it:
Play a mage or an archer. Their combat moves are much more within the borders of believable, even with containing some spinning here and there. It also keeps you away from the center of the battle, so you won't be this much bothered.
Prepare though, the tactical edge of the combat is lost in the process, (or at least it doesn't involve planning but fast reactions to suddes changes in the battlefield).

Nope, they never get tired of using that argument. It seems to me that's the only one they have.

Well... then I apologize.  I'm just all worked up because this game was such a brutal disappointment.  My rage has been unleashed by my heartbreak.

I stand by what I said about teenagers though.  What with all the hormones and the incomplete neural development its a wonder anyone survives puberty at all.
It was a close thing for me, I'll tell you that.

One's experience doesn't necessarily determine what the rest of teenagers are like. Sure, there's a fair share of ADD teenagers or one's with issues, but there's also older people with just as many problems.

I don't necessarily mind that you dislike DA2, my problem lies within your presentation.

I know, I'm usually far more civil, I just let my hackles get up.

Oh, and its not just my experience, teenagers are biologically stupid.  Are you familiar with any neurology, endocrinology or developmental psychology?  The impact of testosterone on the capacity for rational behavior and descision making is shocking!  Its the main reason I get sick to my stomach whenever I hear about a juvinile being sentaced as an adult.  The centers in the brain regulating inhibitions and moral judgements are not fully formed until19-20, and pituitary activ...  I'm rambling...  Sorry again.

Maybe because some people actually like the combat now? I hated combat with a passion in DA:O it was by far the worst part of the game and it wasnt realistic at all. Your not gonna swing a sword, wait 15 seconds then swing it again. Now im not saying combat in DA2 is perfect but its a step in the right direction.

Exactly and I'm sure not all PC gamers think like the OP. But seriously I'm sick of PC gamers throwing their dummies out of the pram because they evolved the combat to be something more advanced than watching your character shuffle towards the enemy.

I'm tired of scum bashing the console gamers left right and center.

Great post and I completely agree with you. Dragon Age was supposed to be a low magic universe filled to the brim with grit and despair. Dragon Age 2 is the complete opposite. Magic is everywhere, combat looks like something out of Naruto and the world is way too clean.

I'd also love to know why people are debating the realism of combat moves in a game where people are shooting magic out of staffs and summoning fire from their hands.

I mean we could argue that you only have to hit someone with a sword once to kill them if we want to argue realism but that wouldn't' make for a very fun game.

Read A Song of Ice and Fire. After that you won't be asking this question ever again.

... Or you could just wait for the HBO show.

Bunk. I've met teenagers that were far more knowledgable and wise than people twice their age. How old you are does not automatically set how smart you are. In general, teenagers are less experianced in many ways, but that does not mean stupid.

I don't think you know much of pc gaming or maybe you're just trolling. Why would anyone update their graphics card every year? I have a 3 years old card and I still play every new game at high quality.

And that about the audio card is even lamer. Why upgrade the audio card?

This.
Neither DAO nor DA2 are even remotely "realistic", unless you real think people just stand still and take turns at hitting each other on the head in a fight.
Seriously, DA2 combat is over the top and too flashy, but if you consider DA:O fights "realistic", you might need a reality check.

I felt the same way as you, OP, since I was a big old school RPG fan. But like you, I had the exact same complaints and made a thread about it. But unlike you, I have given the game a shot and surprisingly have found the combat is almost literally the same as DAO, and yet, infinitely better. The combat plays out literally in the same way except...faster. Just get your head out of your ass for a moment and give it a shot; DA2's combat is miles above DAO. It is also very beautiful to look at and play with.

And thank god they got rid of the 'reused animations' from DAO combat. How many rogue skills were the exact same animation over and over.
