The first romance option I got with Varric was in act 1. I think it was the first or second conversation we had? I'm tempted to run through it (Yet again, I've gone through it 3 times LOL) just so I can post exactly what it was. When I saw the option I was like "HELL YES... i can romance him"... then I came on here and my dreams were shattered... gee guys, thanks

This. Not EVERY dude should be trying to get into your pants. Seriously. It's amazingly refereshing that Varric is all "Brofist" and never "Hey bebe" at you. Even if you tease him and flirt with him, he's just *brofist*.

I know I do, as a female, have a guy friend who's been my best friend since we were kids, and I could hit on him till I'm purple and it wouldn't change our relationship. In fact, its just a big joke between us ;p
Hitting on Varric is more of a joke, then anything serious. In fact, I think you only get that heart option if you're more sarcastic hawke. Because, its less "i'm flirting with you" and more "I'm telling you I genuinly care, but I'm a sarcastic twit and can't tell you outright!".

I would agree with not being able to have a romance with Varric, if A: I didn't constantly feel like I was a therapist taking advantage of my manic patient, Anders, who by the end I wanted to chop his d-nozzle head off and dice it into a thousand pieces, or B: Fenris wasn't so emo that I kept waiting for the conversation "so, did you cut those tattoos into your arms yourself?" ... Varric is exactly like the kind of guy I'd go for RL: funny, cute, stocky, and not all that emotionally damaged

There are dorfs, and there is Varric. He is something else. True to the lore, he is basically a human minded mercenary/merchant who stays on the edge of legal and illegal business. His dwarven ethnicity is only because he was born a dwarf but otherwise has little relation with them beside the family relation. Half of the time, I forgot he is a dwarf. And since the dialog camera hardly ever point down at him when he talks, I even forgot he is a shortie as well.
To me, he is a wise, experience smooth talker mafia like, tough but reasonable. Well I haven't played much further down Act 2 to know more of what he will do in the future. Maybe he will be a double crosser, who knows. Romance option, as female Hawke, I would definitely pick him. Sure he is an R rated type, not PG13 good doing hero, but he is the best of the bunch. Level headed, smooth talking, understanding and very humorous. Sebastian may be the only Knight in Shinny armor character I can think of. I agree that Anders is too pessimistic, Fenris is .... I just can't simply put him into character. maybe Bioware draw elves very bad (worse than DA:O ), Fenris just look ridiculous. He always has this tough guy look with a deep voice, but in reality he is so clueless. He doesn't even know how to read, all he cares about is talking about his slavery past. In 4 years, he didn't even bother cleaning up his living hole, which is supposed to be a nice mansion in Hightown. Who would want to romance him? In which Merrill is the contrary who lives in Lowtown but she manages to keep her house very tidy.

He's the narrator of Hawke's story, the original person who created Hawke into a larger than life figure through stories of the 'Champion of Kirkwall'. It's FAR too messy if he gets romantically involved with the champion as well.
Besides, if you REALLY must have your Varric romance, wait a while and someone is BOUND to make a mod for it.

As far as flirting with non-romanceable npc's, I only saw them with Aveline too, although when I romanced Anders there was a point when Varric was like, "Listen, I noticed you've been getting pretty close with Anders." and the sarcastic option was, "Are you jealous?" but I picked the noble options during that scene which basically led to Varric saying he wasn't sure if getting involved with a possessed mage was a good idea, and I told him "Trust me Varric, I know what I'm doing."
I chose the sarcastic option. Varric says basically, Hawke is hawt, but he's a taken man. Hawke says, oh darn Bianca in the way again. He says she's very jealous.
Of course, it could be to Varric's story 'embellishments'. "Oh man, Hawke was so hot for me, but I had to let her down easy." Cassandra is staring at him like, "Uh huh. Can we get on with this?"

I would have LOVED to see my Hawke develop a romantic relationship with Varric. But then again, Varric being her trusty sidekick was a nice touch. Besides, if Hawke romanced Varric, he would've probably stayed with her (like all the other end love interest's do), and then, who would have told the story of Hawke to the Seeker? Still, Varric was by far the most likeable companion. Bioware did good by him.
