Varric was a Love Interest in early builds. They have to cut it because they needed to test the other options and the QA picketed at the notion of not romancing the dorf given the chance. So they took the chance away.
I very much doubt that given the chance of getting the funny, smart, charming trustworthy and handsome chest haired loving machine, anyone in this planet would target another option. Yes, ever heterosexual overmacho guys would hump Varric, hoping that something of him rubbed onto them.

Maybe cause Bioware doesn't want to see men paired with Varric?

They like giving people the option of being gay in their games (regardless of the character).

I really can't see Varric being gay. *tries* Nope. Still don't see it.

I think Varric loves Hawke in a more...hmm...platonic sense? And the other way around. It's like one of those romances where they say: "Yes, I love you, but all I can really give you is friendship." If...that makes sense. I honestly think Varric is in mourning for a girl he may have loved - hence his quirky "love" for a crossbow. Something is holding him back. I would have romanced him in one playthrough, and Anders in the other. Maybe DA3? At least that's what I hope. Varric and...and Loghain.

Morrigan and Alistair were strictly heterosexual. No love interest in Baldur's Gate 2 was homosexual or bisexual. IIRC, in Jade Empire, Dawn Star was heterosexual. Hell, in Dragon Age 2 Choir Boy is heterosexual only. So Varric as heterosexual wouldn't be that rare.

This rings true to me, too, especially because of what he says to Merrill "there was a girl and I made a promise..." But that isn't going to stop me from seeking out fanfic that moves past friendship into love interest territory. There are some really well written Varric/FemHawke ones out there so far, especially on the Dragon Age Kink Meme.

I would love it if it turned out in DA3 that Varric was not telling the whole truth to Cassandra about his role in Hawke's personal life, though once you start to go down that route, possibly everything is up for grabs... possibly. I'm pretty happy to keep it all in my imagination so as not to be brutally disppointed a few years from now if it turns out we still can't have him in game.

Probably because we are all different humans with different opinions and some of us think a romance would enhance, rather than detract from, the Varric relationship. It's not as if there is a measureable standard for "ruining." We're in subjective territory here, methinks.

I personally enjoy the loving friendship between them, but I can't help it if my fangirl mind goes elsewhere. XD

At first I didn't want to romance Varric, but then I played the game and he's just too much of a sweet-heart to pass up. Most of the time I wanted to give him big hugs and kisses.

This could be a theory...I like it. An while I am an unrepentant, crazy Fen-Girl; if someone offered me the chance to give Choir Boy's LI status to Varric, it'd be done in a heartbeat. There!

well... i think i kind of see why this thread died so abruptly... still, i'm finding i need a place to voice my chagrin that varric wasn't an li. (wonder if he'll be in 'inquisition'?) poor hawke. it all seemed to come down to 'which flavor of crazy' s'he'd choose, regardless of the situation. s'he could have used someone sweet and stable, (like varric, or, say---aveline!) but it just wasn't to be.
