At the time she gave the amulet to Hawke, the same time Lothering was destroyed, wich is just before Morigan asks the Warden to kill Flemmth so she could obtain her true Grimoire,

She knew that she was going to perish to the warden, so she stored a piece of her self in the amulet so she could be resurrected in near kirkwall and make a cammeo in DA3 *wink* *wink*

She didn't actually know that, but she had a hunch that something like that might happen. Thats why she  made the amulet as backup.

Shes been reading Harry Potter and put part of herself in it incase she "died"
