Any tips on fighting the Qunari at the end of Act II?  Every time I try, I feel I'm doing really well, and then SOMETHING happens (not sure what, maybe something the arishok does?) and suddenly all my characters get really low health, and then most of them keel over and I'm left with like poor Sebastian trying desperately to salvage the rest of the fight (which doesn't work terribly well, BTW).

What is happenening that suddenly sucks the life out of everyone? How do I combat it?

EDIT: In case it's not clear, I'm fighting the whole Qunari with my whole group, not doing a 1 on 1 duel with the Arishok.

Are you talking about the warm up with the small group of Honor Guard, or the full Monty? If the second, here's what I recall.

It took me two tries on normal mode to get it. There are multiple spell casters among the Qun to the left and right up the stairs. There is a little bit of a delay before the Arishok wades in. To start the fight, I send Anders into Vengeance mode, then drop an AOE to the left, and another to the right with Varric. I play rogue and point Hawke at the nearest Qun and let tactics control Aveline. I am the most content with Aveline's tactics set up - like Alistair, she's a set-and-forget tank who goes to work and rarely needs intervention except for health pots when Anders is on cool-down.

I send Hawke off to kill or severely beat down any melee Qun who wade past to take out Varric or Anders. At some point, they draw so much hate that I leave Hawke alone to do her thing and concentrate on these two to keep them alive for as long as possible. When I have a moment of breathing room, I summon the Dog - he's good for mopping up or harassing severely weakened enemies.

The Arishok charged a couple of times, unless I am mistaken... Like an ogre. Also, if you dont take down the Qunari casters fast they will make your job harder with the exploding ball of lightning unpleasantness.

Anders went down first both times, but he's taken out quite a few. Varric and Bianca hold on longer, but I'm left both times with Aveline and Hawke with one or two melee Quns and the Arishok.  I use one to kite Arishok around, while the other takes out the last two flunkies.  I resummoned the dog several times. The first attempt ended with Hawke cornered and Aveline the last standing with the Arishock plus one more.

The second attempt, I kited the Arishock around between Aveline and Hawke until I killed off the last of his underlings.  Finally, Aveline got caught with too much damage during a potion cool down and he KOd her. I kited him around solo until a potion cooldown expired, or my stamina regen caught up. Then I'd Gauntlet him, and hit him with every nasty rogue talent I had: twin blade, backstab, vendetta...etc. I didn't stand still. He's slow to swing - slow enough that you can usually get out of the way before he connects, even without Evade.

He will use health pots too, so if I didn't hurt him enough, I'd turn and run and start the cycle over again. Eventually I caught him with enough damage that he had a small bit of health left and I went toe to toe, keeping him off balance and unable to use a pot before I took him down.

Was I the only one a bit sad that Hawke had to take down the Arishok? I kinda liked him, in his own way. A respect/rival thing of it's own.

Console commands.

Enable the developer console first, and then use this line:

runscript zz_supercrit_player. You now have 50dex 50str 1000 health and 1000 stamina.

BAM. You will no longer have problems fighting the arishtok.

I trust this was a fix for your problem, so good day Serrah.

Which would be awesome if I wasn't on the Xbox360, and if I had any interest in cheating.

Thanks for the tips, Hannova. I knew there were Qunari mages around causing damage, but in the melee I couldn't ever find them.

(And yes, I'm talking about the full monty. I got lulled into a false sense of security when I took down the honor guard in about 20 seconds, and then got slammed in the face by the big fight.) I'm assuming there's no way (other than the duel, which according to the forums looks just as bad or worse) to get out of it? I thought it was going to let me talk my way out of it by promising to track down Isabella, but then the Arishok was like "Too late! You're responsible for your companions! Rawr!"

They need to die... and rather quickly.

I got here on nightmare with no potions left and the best thing I could do was to IMMEDIATELY run to the upper right (or left) corner of the bottom part of the room to force the bottom of the room to group up, burst them down as fast as possible, and run up and kill the mages.

Actually, I think there is one sarrebas on the stairs at the start of the fight? If so, hit it with something like crushing prison or petrify to buy you some time to clear the floor out a little before you run up top to finish the mages.

What is killing you is the lightning orb thing that the sarrebas cast (floats in the air, easy to spot).
Run your group out of this ASAP.

So, keep squishies out of harm's way, clear room as quickly as possible of mages and archers to get the room to you vs arishock asap.

Got this last night after a few tries.

AOE means never having to say "Okay... where are you?!" If you get those spells out first thing, you should take down the spell casters before they get a chance to make your day unpleasant. Once the AOEs are underway, I got Crushing Prison to stick and Exploding Arrow to ruin the day of the guys standing by the Arishok.

I took the same option too - tell him I'll get his sodding book back and skin the Raiveni, so I haven't done the one on one fight yet.  Nobody spoiler it for me - I really, really want to kill Isabela.

Choose to duel the Arishok one-on-one instead, like an honorable Champion.

The thing is, beating the Arishok one on one is highly dependent upon having a spec that's good for it. Essentially, no matter what class you picked he's got a lot more relative damage output than you (hard to compare exactly since the scale of enemy damage and health is different from the scale for player characters). So, if you're going to beat him you have to prevent him from hitting you so much. For example, upgraded pommel strike helps immensely on a warrior, since the upgrade more than doubles the proportion of the time you can keep him stunned. Naturally, you should still bring appropriate consumables, because you probably won't be able to take him without using any potions, but if you have the appropriate control abilities he'll be a lot less stressful to deal with.

I killed the two guards that spawned behind me first, then ran up top and killed the two mages. Aveline tanked everything on the ramp. Eventually, Aveline died while 4-5 Qunari + the Arishok were still alive. I ran around killing the last Qunari, staying away from the Arishok. I res'd Aveline and killed him. Make sure you run away when he does his whirlwind and dodge when he charges and stun him when he picks someone up.

Sarrebas are rigged, they do more damage than I do.

Keep your guys spread out and kill the Sarrebas asap. Set up a cross class combo on him.
