To win this fight, I had to decrease the difficulty to easy (!). This happend... I don't remember, if I ever had to do this in a game before.

This is, what I did:
1) Encountered the strange creatures
2) One of them suddenly started talking to me and promised to stop the attacks and give me a key
3) For this favour he wanted me to kill some other creature
4) Hawke's sister said "...demon", so I rejected the demand and a fight started; killed the demon
5) Next "room" the ghost attack started, nevertheless

I noticed, that the ghost's actions follow a certain order. I could evade his lightning field by running behind a pillar. I also managed to kill his minions quickly, although I didn't see, if they're just there to fight me or if they heal the big one or both. After bashing onto the rolled up body, it started again.
Any attempt to aggro by Aveline failed, he went after the rogue (me) and the archer (dwarf). Both were almost one-hit-killed, then he took on the mage (sister of Hawke).
Finally only Aveline was alive and hit him with her sword, but the damage numbers were green and I had the impression, he gets healed with every hit, as the numbers corresponded to the sword's damage and his health bar didn't go down a bit.

So, what's up with this? What did I forget, not notice, etc. ?

PS.: I can't find a search-button, so I guess, it is again disabled, as it was when DA:O came out.
My apologies, if this topic has been discussed before.

I had to respec my Mage Hawke into a spirit healer to beat this fight on normal. The boss has an extremely large amount of health. Avoid the bosses magnetic beams of death and kill all his little helpers each time they come out and play. Keep your ranged attackers on their toes for when he does his rolly polly act and try and keep your tank/other party members healed up. All this should help but with a Spirit Healer it turns into a good old fashioned easy as pie tank and spank.

Odd... Didn't happen to me.

Advice: do not do fireball or cone of cold on that one, that'll make your mage a threat. Have them (ranged/mage) stand far away from him and use basic attacs and winters grasp -- as well as any supportive spells.

This boss was a hard fight.

So, with a good healer and / or lots of health potions it's just a matter of time, right?
Good to know. I really thought, I made a mistake and didn't see the obvious.

You mean Ancient Rock Wraith right? That fight took me four attempts and the final one took AAAAAAAAGES.

Still, I don't really believe, that it is only a matter of potions and / or a specific healer-build for a spellcaster.
There was another fight down there, against the dragon. This fight was hard, too, but with some tactics - like retreating into the hallways - finally to win.
I'm looking forward until someone figured out a tactic against this stone-thing.
Should it be like Darkshore wrote, it's a poorly designed bossfight, IMO.

Fight near the pillars. It tends to get stuck on them. Eg. when it does it's rolling move, it rolls into the pillars and any party standing within its range but next to the pillars got minimal if any damage.

I used Aveline to keep it distracted (maaaaan she is one tough mother) whilst my 2H hawke went round the back, Varric's abilities which cover my party in mist were useful to minimise chances of being hit.

Anders I think is a must for this fight. Being the only character with a revive from ko spell with his panacea series of abilities. He'd provide magic from range but also keep an eye on everybodies health and yeah, like i said, get them back up if they got KOd.

That was essentially the same set up I used for the Dragon.

Two things that are important for both those fights:
a) resistance to knock-backs. Both the Dragon and the Ancient Rock Wraith (the latter more so) have moves that will knock you back big time. The dragon jumps up in the air and knocks you back with a blast from its wings, and pretty much every normal physical attack from the ARW will knock you back unless you have high enough fortitude.

B) Only relevant for Warriors: If you are playing a Warrior you NEED the kills on those Dragonlings/Profanes that spawn. Seeing as you only regen stamina upon killing something, those smaller creatures will replenish your stamina in what would otherwise be a very long haul without any special abilities. So don't let the rest of your party clean out the underlings, make sure you get them.
