Hello all, I've been having troubles getting High Res pack to work to be able to use the Very High settings.
My Computer meets the system requirements, exceeeds actually. GPU is a GTX 480, CPU is i7 930 @2.80GHz. Graphics driver is up to date.
I've checked the archives and other people's problems and I haven't found others specifically like mine. It may be solved easily as I tend to overlook things sometimes.
I am playing PC version, physical disc. Game version says 1.00. I am currently running the game on High, 1680 x 1050 resolution, vertical sync enabled, AA to 4x, Widescreen. DX11 is being used. With these settings it runs perfectly fine. Very smooth, no choppiness, no graphical bugs even in the really big battles with three mages firing off huge spells etc. So it runs fine.
I do have all the DLC installed that is available, I do have the High Resolution Package installed, as the Configuration Utility allows me to enable the High Resolution Textures.
But when I try to bump the game up to Very High from High, I get severe FPS drop, very choppy, and huge graphical bugs on the ground when I rotate the camera as a certain angle. The graphical bugs look like huge black spots, squares, objects or something on the ground around me. Not sure exactly what it is.
Is there a way to get this pack to work without the FPS drop and these graphical bugs? I've tried lowering various settings, even the resolution, but the graphical bugs are persistant. One thing odd that I did notice, is that there doesn't seem to be any problems with Very High setting when in Kirkwall. Anywhere, even the city dungeons, the Very High setting doesn't cause fps loss or the black squares. But if I travel to the Wounded Coast, or Bone Pit, or etc.. anywhere outside the city, the problems come up.
So hopefully you guys can help me here. I really want to get the Very High setting to work, I'd love to see what the game can really look like.
Cheers

As long as you run DX11 with "High" setting you can already use the texture pack - simply tick the box for it at the bottom of the video settings window (high resolution textures or something like that).
The difference between the "High" and "Very High" setting on DX11 is that High adds DX10 features (lighting and shadows), while Very High also adds DX11 features (mainly tessellation). The base DX11 features currently have major performance issues with Nvidia hardware, so it's recommended to NOT turn that on and just run on High (which means you only use DX10, instead of DX10 + DX11 tessellation) until bioware and/or Nvidia update the game and/or drivers for better performance with each other.
Underneath the settings there are 4 optional settings, namely Ambient Occlusion (SSAO), Depth of Field (DOF), High Quality Blur and High resolution textures.
There is no reason NOT to enable high resolution textures in your case, as the performance hit should be negligible on a GTX480. SSAO you can also turn on ingame, as it's a DX10 special feature, but it may give some performance issues, since the type of SSAO this game uses is very badly optimized for Nvidia hardware (seeing a theme here?). In my case it stutters too much so I've turned it off.
That leaves the other 2 settings, DOF and Blur - both are DX11 special features, so they are greyed out ingame when running "High" setting, however if you want you can still use them without swtiching to Very High by exiting the game, going to Documents -> Bioware -> Dragon Age 2 -> dragonage.ini, opening that and changing the two settings for depthoffield and qualityblur manually to =1. These settings may also have an impact on performance, but it won't be anywhere near as bad as running with DX11 tesselation (the Very High setting ingame) on.

Thank you for the reply it was very much appreciated. I suppose that means I'll just have to wait until Bioware can get this working.

My graphic card, albeit paid with $250 a while back, were not capable of "Very High" setting, although I am still able to run Hi-Res pack. Well, hi-res pack means just higher resolution bit-map and maybe bump map files for textures. It does almost nothing for characters because they were made at Hi-res already (not all, pay attention to zoom into some random beggar NPC on the street, say, at Hightown night time, they look very blur on the face).
Having said that, Hi-res pack just replaces your original textures of the game. They should be just different "art work", not offering any new "graphical features". In fact, given the knowledge and skill, you can even make your own Hi-res textures replacing anything you want in game. If I read your post correctly, you experience the "graphic bugs" with different resolutions when using "Hi-Res" pack? May I ask if you have tried those areas without "Hi-Res"? Just save and load on the same spots.
I have reason to believe that your "Hi-res" pack is corrupted. It was either installed incorrectly or even downloaded incorrectly. Try removing this DLC, reinstall it. If this does not work, you may consider re-downloading this DLC altogether. Clear browser cache before doing so to ensure you are getting a brand new file, not the same file you downloaded a while ago.
P/S: Your avatar picture looks interesting, does it come out of a game or it is photoshoped? It looks so real. It's so small so I can't tell.

His avatar is Zaeed, from the first DLC for Mass Effect 2. One of the best looking characters in the game. Really looks amazing. Pity my non-DirectX 11 machine can't get my Dragon Age 2 characters looking like that. Really disappointed.

Hello there. I just helped out a friend with just the same problem as you. It is a driver issue with Nvidia, but if you download the latest BETA drivers, you will see increased performance on all settings, and the black spots should go away.
Hope this helps
