All I have to say is, don't do the duel with an archer Hawke. Or at the very least don't forget the Mabari summoning until a few deaths in.

Run around like a little pansy like I did and hit him when he's vunerable.

OK update on my side. This was fun lol. I had a dual with him as a rogue. I kept backstabbing him and made sure I usually ended up at his back after his attacks. Most of the time he just stood there.... and .. did nothing. Apart from one time where I needed to kite him a little bit until I could take a health potion and my backstab was off cooldown. Other than that it was easy. Though I played on Casual ;-)

That's what i did.  Eventually, I gave up and summoned Dog.  I was running circles around one of the pillars, being chased by the Arishok, as the Dog bit at his heels  Yep, tbehold the Champion of Kirkwall

I beat him in a duel on Normal diff with my SH mage. Seriously. with that aura, it's like god mode. Nothing can kill you unless it takes all your health in one hit.
Mostly I kited him around the pillars till he got into 'charge' mode and then shot him with my staff. he woudl also stop to attack, run/dodge his attacks and he stands there with this WTF expression swinging at empty air for a few seconds while I pelted him at range. (no destructive spells with the Aura up). It takes a while but she whittled him down.
So...run screaming like a little girl around the room till he dies? Worked for me ! I didn't realize I could summon Dog. I may try that next time, but it really wasn't necessary.

My Rogue just played tagged with him, used some stun bombs, followed up with two strikes (HE WAS ON SPEED) and then Twin Fangs...I swear that move nearly kills anything!

Dog, Assassinate, dual fangs, backstab.... run run run.... heal/stamina potion if required, *repeat*

I didn't find it a 'difficult' fight but ultimately felt cheap because he could manage so much damage against me so quick and I had to kite him around the entire room waiting for my abilities to come back.

At the end everyone cheered... if I was watching the fight i would have laughed at the absurdity of this rogue being chased around the room by an angry Qunari.

Exactly my thoughts about this kind of boss-fights.

My mage also had to run around with him on my heels (hadn't downloaded dog yet at that point), using ice spells when they weren't on CD, and Arishok would sometimes say something along the lines of "this isn't a fight, this is exercise" or something, and I couldn't help but think "you've got a point, there"

I just imagine, I would have made this when I was a school-kid. Challenging someone much older and much stronger and then running in circles.
I guess, the only way out of this - no matter, if I win or not - would have been to convince my parents to go to another place, Mongolia perhaps.

I found almost every boss fight to be like this. Unless you had the holy trinity, every boss fight was reduced to a silly kite-fest...Easy enough to deal with, but not heroic in the least.

I did it on my first try with my Archer. Just remember to have a few of those potions that recover your health once it hits 0, assasinate and stealth and you are good to go. Stealth is usefull to let your cooldowns recover a bit without him bashing at you, and gives you a critical hit if shoot before it runs out. The problems is his potions. Once the 3 are over though, it is pretty straightforward.

I agree, although I can just talk for a 2-WF rogue. As you can read here, for others these bosses are a cakewalk.

Lulz What?

Archer Rogue is the way to go. You can occasionally pin him with pinning strike, but it never lasts as long as i'd like it too... and it's more like chipping away at his health... but the battle is very simple and overall boring. As most of these boss fights in DA2 are shaping out to be. Archer's Lance is however very amusing... position yourself in whatever fashion and try to shoot as many people as you can in a line... my current record is 6 kills and 2 crits.

And for all these people that I keep seeing, summon dog... yea it's a way to do it... but here is probably a better and more effecient way for any type of rogue to get this little job done with the arishok.

Learn the Assassin Tree.

Toss Mark Of Death On The Arishok.

Use Pinpoint Strikes.

Use Assassination.

Run Around. Rinse Wash Repeat.

Took me... 3-5 assassinations to kill him.

Is there anything special for beating him 1v1 instead of with your group? I've been desperately trying to beat this jagoff for awhile now with my 2H warrior to no avail. Will he stop chugging potions during the fight at any point? If he didn't do this cheap move, I wouldn't have a problem with how insanely overpowered his abilities are. I also loathe the fact that I can not knock him down, but he can do it to me every time even though my fortitude is quite high.

yes, you can determine when he is going to do a special move.
when he does so "just" move to a side or put a pilar between him and you.
he is not really over powered just take a long time to whitle him down, like all the bosses in DA2.
On the + side he does not call for backup.
