I found the whole black powder plot you do in the first act to be a terribly weak point in the plot of this game. Some random guy you don't know or cares about asks for your help, and you're irresistibly compelled to help him?!

I didn't want to help him, and tried to tell him to sod off, but somehow helping him was a main plot quest that absolutely had to be done despite the fact that I saw no apparent reason to do so.

I do not approve.

Most RPGs at least try to tie main quests to things the protagonist cares about. They're generally not initiated by seemingly random encounters and motivated by making a small amount of money.

The "I wanted to kill Arl Eamon" group feels your pain.

The point of Act 1 is to raise money for the Deep Roads. Hence, money being the motivating factor makes sense.

Baldur's Gate 2's post-prologue early game operates on the same principle.

The "I wanted to kill Arl Eamon" group is right here indeed.

Didn't dislike him, but still, would've made life more interesting.

If you raised the money before you recruited merril then why didnt you just go to the deep roads?

You can't. There are some things you must finish before you go.

Trust us, it ties into the story at the end of Act 2 :)
