+Damage type gear and Basic Attack Damage?

Ok so assuming that gear bonuses generally work the same way that they did in the first game. These bonuses obviously affect spells (example Winter's Grasp with gear that says +x% cold dmg would boost the dmg).

I have just gotten into Act 2 myself, and my MHawke Mage has found a lot of +x% fire dmg gear. Namely the Staff of Parlathan gives +13% fire dmg if I'm not mistaken.

Now I've found a few other staffs and I've been comparing basic attack damage.

As far as I can tell when I used a different staff the dmg was generally the same. Wouldn't it make sense that the dmg would be boosted by the gear bonus as well.
I say this because there are swords and even staffs that give +physical dmg, and since swords only do physical dmg (as far as I know) it would boost the basic attacks from the sword I would assume.

Any clues? I'll try testing out my other staffs when I have some free time and compare the average dmg that I do with different ones.

To be honest its hard to calculae because spell tooltips dont seem to update for the percentage damage. For instance, if you have ring with plus 10% physical damage your dps tooltip doesn't take into account the change. As such I'm having a hard time figuring out weather the added percent damage does anything.

What I have noticed is that if you are mage, your staff's actual base damage effects your spell damage as well as your auto attack. For instance i stuck with the staff of parthanon or whatever for a long time because it has +14% fire damage. However I noticed when i switched for a staff that had no plus fire damage but about 10 higher dps that my spell damage on firestorm shot through the roof.

My point is, because its unclear what is taken into account on spell tooltips or ability screen I've had a hard time figuring out weather the bonuses are broken or the display system is broken..

I am unsure myself. I stuck with the Staff of Parthalan for a long time as well.
I mastered the Primal Spells and changed to a Staff with lightning damage, and I'm very happy!!
The bonus of +25% lightning damage from Primal Mastery does extend to your basic attacks. I was doing roughly 50 fire dmg with the Staff of Parthalan. With my new staff the average damage is roughly 100ish. The dps doesn't represent this score even thought the passive spell should affect it, but I guess + "type" damage isn't considered. I don't even think abilities that give + general damage are considered.

So it should be safe to assume that gear works the same way, but most gear will give max +15% type damage. At least that I've seen so far in Act 2.

It does, you can see this with Cleave which is 100% dmg boost. It doesn't show up on the char sheet but it does double the damage output.

One thing to note is your base attack damage (for all classes) determines the damage of 'everything'. So anything that increases that, increases all spells. Basically the damage you see on the sheet is just your weapon damage + dmg from str. Everything else doesn't seem to effect the read-out, but you can easily see the effects in combat.

Also in case your wondering, str/dex/mag add +1 dmg per 2 points. So the bulk of your damage is from the actual staff ultimately. You'd need 70 Magic just to double a 30 dmg staff, and you start getting well past that later on. All abilities do a certain percentage 'base' of all of that.

Yeah I'm just now starting to find +electricity% Armor and Staves in Act 3 for my Mage. And that stuff definitely makes a huge difference.

I've noticed that as well, the higher base dmg staff/weapon you have, the higher everything else is.
