I didn't get the chance to comment on this previously, but I will now. This was the most irritating thing in the game for me. It interfered with my enjoyment far more than the repeated use of settings and glitches. Not to slam anyone else's preferred LI, but I had no interest in any of the other options, so I spent 2/3 of the game pursuing Aveline only to find out that no matter what I did I would be shot down. Other people can feel that is "brilliant" or "realistic", but I feel it is annoying and pathetic. I get enough of realism in real life. I don't play a game where I hurl spells, slaughter darkspawn/raiders/demons, battle the Arishok in one on one combat, and get named the hero of my small corner of the world for realism. And I don't think after doing those things it is unrealistic to want to get the girl as well. Had she merely been unromancable I would have been disappointed. After spending all the time pursuing her only to be subjected to a scene of Hawke standing dejectedly in the corridor like he was in some teen angst movie while Aveline giggles in the next room with someone else was about as far from brilliant as it gets. The sad thing is that those people that like Aveline as unromancable would not have their game be any different if she was romancable. Things could have played out just as they did for them. For a miniscule amount of extra effort there could have been a way to bring her around to interest in Hawke at the end of that series of events for what would have been one of the best romances in the game in my opinion. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Mine is that this was incredibly crappy and irritating, not two traits I look for in video games.
In summary, badly done Bioware. Very badly done.

I wouldn't so mad that I couldn't romance Aveline if the dude she ends up with didn't look like he should be playing bass for Foghat.

The thing is that Bioware really jumbled up DA2 Romances and before I get slammed by people defending their favorite LI's I am just saying that their is some thing called Fan Service and I believe that Bioware went over board with it I truly believe that DA2's Romances where a step back from Origins Romances.

I think that Bioware had originally decided to have a Hawke/Avaline Romance because during The Long Road when Isabella is busting Avalines Chops about not being with anyone for 4 years she makes a remark about why she didn't get with someone she knew which no doubt she was referring to Hawke. I had Flirted with Avaline at any chance I got and I got the line and was like yeah forget that loser and be with Hawke.

Also Bioware is apparently patching this buggy yet great game I think they should fix the biggest bug in game in my opinion and that is that "HAWKE CAN'T ROMANCE AVALINE"

The funny thing is that I am only going to do 4 Saves and that is going to be the end of Dragon Age 2 for me and I will use all 4 with any DLC'S or Expansions that Bioware makes but that will be it just the 4 and thats the end for me and then back to Mass Effect 2 for me.

Here this is what they are going to be
William Hawke
Weapon Style:Great Sword
class:Warrior
Specialzations:
1.Beserker
2.Reaver
Romance:None

Robert Hawke
WeaponStyle:Bow
class:Rogue
Specialzations:
1.Assassin
2.Shadow
Romance:None

Bob Hawke
Weapon Style:Dual Daggers
class:Rogue
Specialzations:
1.Assassin
2.Duelist
Romance:Isabella

Robbie Hawke
Weapon Style:Mage Staff
class:Mage
Specialzations:
1.Force Mage
2.Spirit Healer
Romance:Merrill "RivalMance"

I love during that scene that you can "flirt" with Aveline and ask her specifically why she likes Donnic.  Even she doesn't know!  She calls him average in just about everything and I find that hilarious.  Sometimes you just can't explain love!

I think that the fact of the matter is that it is salt on the wound to all of us Avaline Fans the entire Donnic thing is messed up because frankly Avaline is the only real female character I really liked and I believe Avaline would have been the one calling the shots in any Hawke/Avaline Romance because just like hawke himself has said the Avaline can be forceful.

While I'm a little sad that we can't romance Aveline (I adore her ), I actually rather like that you can't. It makes her feel so much more REAL somehow....

I mean, we're used to game characters falling over themselves for the PC, and the fact that she doesn't and is the one who always calls Hawke out on his/her sh!t (especially on the rival path) just makes me love her even more. Her character isn't squashed to fit the LI mould and it makes her very consistent.

Even in Origins, everyone was all about the Warden (romantically or not), whereas Aveline just lives her own life.

@Lady Vengeance
I still think that Bioware should have made her romanceable but made it difficult to accomplish so her character would not have been damaged that way they could have had her still intrested in that loser Donnic and Hawke would have to work hard to win her heart.

Because the Love Triangles in Origins always involved the Player having to chose between 2 Li's but instead Bioware should have made the player be one of the 2 vieing for Avalines affections and this way Hawke would have been seen as just a regular guy not some Hero.

It would have been good because think about it Avaline is a strong Independent Character and I don't think she would have changed at all as a LI I would think if anything Hawke would have been the one to change and that would have been a Re-freshing change Imagine it he is the Champion and then when he gets home he would be just Hawke with Avaline because she is his equal and not some Damsel in Distress and thats why I wish she was a LI.

I just think you boys and girls are just mad that Avaline is the ONLY ONE not throwing her panties at Hawke ;p

Leave Avaline alone. She's strong, independant, and likes a man who's stable --- aka, not getting into everyone's buisness and being chased by h alf a dozen theves/mage/templar groups at any given time XD

Its refeshing to see someone NOT want to jump the main character's bones. Yes some of the other LI are .. less then optimal..

But Fenris is MUCH more sane then Anders.. and suprisingly enough, isabela is a great LI once she gets out of act2. Just avoid Janders and Merril-the-intense and you'll have two very stable, if slightly wounded,LI with a bit of baggage (aka, akin to most people in rl.)

Ok so WTF. there are 4 females in the game total. 1 is your sister so no romance there that would just be sick. and avaline isn't an option.... but they give u plenty of gay guys hitting on male hawke...... is this to make up for that BS with Mass Effect 1's love scene? now they have to just put a bunch of gay guys in the game. oh we get 2 females 1's a blood mage abomination and the other is a **** with more seamen on her shirt than on her boat. Biggest fail in the game IMHO.

There are four love interests -- two males, two females, all four are bisexual.

I think this means that there are an equal numver of love interests for males and females, gay and straight.  I realize that may seem overwhelmingly unfair if you're a straight male, but for this straight female, I am SO glad that there are also two male love interests @@

Edit: Sebastian doesn't really count because his is not a fully developed romance -- maybe slightly more deep than Aveline's but not by much.

What about if during Avaline's first quest- during the scene where you have to go safe Donnic there is a cutscene involved where both Aveline and Donnic are at knifepoint. The Mercenaries make you choose who is goining to get killed because they want their pay and a guardsman has to die. If the player chooses Aveline- she breaks out on her own and you fight off the rest of the Mercenaries and the game continues as normal (with her romance with Donnic) except you might get some rivalry points about it and she might confront you later about it. (You could probably tell her that you knew she could handle it to offset the rivalry points).

If you choose Donnic, the Mercenaries kill Donnic. You have the option to let them go for rivalry points with Aveline (if pursuing a rivalry romance) or kill them. After the quest is finished, you have a scene with Aveline where she tells you she wishes you had chosen her to be killed by the Mercenaries. This is where the romance can truly start. Hawke has the option of telling her that he couldn't bear the thought of not being without her.

Thus removes Donnic from the game. :)

I personally think that any kinda Romance between Hawke and Avaline would be the best because as I have stated they are equals I love Avaline because she is a strong and Independent woman and that makes her the most appealing Female in Dragon Age 2 because as I see It
1.Avaline-"Strong,Loyal and Independant"
2.Isabella-"Wild,Unpredictable and also Independant
3.Merrill-"Shy, Cute and Clingy

And I would choose Avaaline evertime if she was available.

She wasn't written this way and she wasn't written as a romance.  If you want to see her as a romance, there's always fanfiction.

The thing is that Bioware created 2 of the most intresting characters in Avaline & Varric and they can't be romanced the main reasons for them not being romanced being these.

Avaline
She was originally not supposed to be romanceable because of Wesley and his death but then Bioware decided that they wanted to further her character growth by making her move on with that Loser Donnic.
I figure they did not make her an Romance option for Hawke for one reason and one reason only because Avaline was a Straight Female whose Character was already written that way so they couldn't make her Bi.

Varric
Varric is a staple of my team he is awesome and funny to boot he is a great off set for Diplomatic/Aggressive Hawkes and he is Epic with Charming/Funny Hawke.
The main reason Varric isn't romanceable is he is a Dwarf.

Sigh Aveline. You could bend on your knees with flowers, sing her a Fereldan love song, strip off and give her a lapdance and she still would not take the hint.

*Hawke grinding on Avelines lap*

Aveline: Aww that's sweet Hawke.

I actually thought this was great writing. If you think about it, pursing any other NPC romantically in any other game will result in success.

I rather enjoyed playing a heartbroken male Hawke.

So, the only female romanceable characters are a ****ty pirate and a blood mage. Yeah, that's some balance there.

not everyone you flirt with will be interested in you, and that's just that. There's a few npcs that will shoot you down as well as a couple of party members, but there's still plenty of companions interested in Hawke. So there's definately options, just because they aren't the options you want doesn't mean that the game is bad or poorly designed.

you can't have everything your way, anyway.

I found it to be hilarious really and yeah having every character in love with yours isn't that believable or needed.

Where are you getting your information?  When is it ever stated by any of the devs that Aveline wasn't supposed to be romanceable because of Wesley?  Stop making your assumptions fact, please.

I loved that you could flirt with her and it just appeared to bounce off, just like I loved the Samara thing in ME2. Sometimes romance doesn't go your way, no matter how awesome you are.
I had no idea that you could take it all the way to heartbreak though, that's fantastic and worth a try.
