Zevran in DA2 was a nice surprise

Thanks to the devs that even tho the game is clearly rushed there are nice little surprises that remind us why Dragon Age is a great game. The atmosphere is what MAKES or BREAKS the game and I still have some hope for Dragon Age 3. And I still sense some atmosphere left in DA2 that could bid well for the return of our favorite characters in later hopefully FAR more polished part of the saga.

I wonder if there's any hope of bopping around with the Origins characters again in DA3.

It's possible. There are little hints throughout DA2 that big things are happening in the world outside of Kirkwall. And while we don't know the details, it appears that none of the DAO companions that appear in the game are left entirely idle (there's a letter floating around that indicates Zevran's been a very busy elf...). It's possible that we'll once again work alongside some of the DAO companions at some point in the future in an attempt to resolve some of the issues that they're working on.
As for why Zevran's connection with the Warden might not come up - I think the matter is simple enough. In DAO right before the Battle of Denerim, he asks the Grey Warden to release him and allow him to leave before the battle. The explanation that he gives is straightforward - participating in the battle will generate a certain amount of fame for him, and that will make it easier for the Antivan Crows to locate him. I would imagine that he's made a conscious decision to stay out of the stories involving the Hero of Fereldan and as a result his participation in defeating the Fifth Blight isn't as well known as that of, say, Leliana. So Hawke doesn't know enough to ask, and Zevran has no reason to bring it up.
Given Zevran's current "dispute" with the Antivan Crows, it's also highly unlikely that he'd be able to stay with the Hero for six years. So while he probably still has feelings for the Hero if you romanced him, the hero isn't constantly in his thoughts.

No, the hero is mentioned, and if he's romanced, you can learn they still travel together. It's a very VERY small reference, though, and easy to miss.
Edit: The cameos that are there are obviously fan service -- why would they have a dumped warden with NO explanation? That would make no sense.

Ah. I pursued Leliana instead of Zevran on my playthrough, so there wouldn't be mention of a romance. I don't remember him bringing up the Hero at all, though. On the other hand, I did have Isabella in my party and it's possible that changed the dialogue slightly. Maybe he only mentions the Hero if she's not around?
To a certain extent, I agree that yes there's a certain amount of fan service with his appearence in this game - particularly given the way that the conversation turns if Isabella's in the party
Two other companions also have appearences in this game. The game is pretty clear that one of them is almost certainly going to be involved in something later on. The other is a bit more confusing, though, for reasons that I won't get into in a Zevran thread.

Hmmm, cameos. There's more than just two others (though the LIs were probably the most anticipated). I suppose I can bring up Anders at this point without it being a spoiler (and that's not a cameo), but I can think of another as well.
Yeah, but I'm mentally segregating them based on a fairly simple criteria (that's not LI-related).
The other one also doesn't appear to be as much of a mover/shaker person when you meet, though that might just be due to lack of information provided by the character in question.
