They are junk, hence the sell all junk button. No purpose whatsoever but to take up space and make you visit the vendors more often to get rid of all the crap.

Because they add more flavor than simple cash. Most of them are humorous or fit the theme of the current adventure.

To make up for ME2's lack of loot.

I love it when people who can't spell, structure sentences nor capitalize complain about things being "dumbed down". Stop "dumbing down" the English language.

If that's really what they want they should at least give different icons to them or a small description to them. Or, they can make you able to drop it and see how it's like just as in fallout 3. But I guess that's too much to ask for given it's Bioware.
For now, junk is solely junk.

Although this forum is mainly in English, many members here don't speak English natively. I'm one of them. I don't think you should blame people for improper use of language. After all, this is a gaming forum, not a grammar forum.

I've never been able to drop stuff in a BioWare Game... this one follows what they do. and actually it's stupid junk, not crafting material... why bothering about ''description'' for junk ? no one will read it and send it directly to the closest shop.

Junk is junk, it doesn't have any other purpose then to be junk. That's like asking if garbage has any purpose.

I like the junk loot. It's also a subtle dig at loot hounds like myself when you track down a side corridor to relieve a skeleton of it's torn pants.

I like how they do it this time though. No need to go through wiki or keep junk cuz you don't know if it's has another purpose whatsoever.

Have you noticed the name of many of these junk items?

Vial of Darkspawn Blood.
Small Gold Bar.
Map of Occupied Ferelden.

Those should all sound familiar if you played DA:O! Sure, not all the junk items are easter-eggish like these are, and just about all junk items have ridiculously junky sales prices, but I got a lot of grins off the names of many of them. I got the Vial of Darkspawn Blood off of one of the first Darkspawn I encountered in the Prologue. I thought it was an awesome nodding tie-in to the first post-Origin quest you have to do in DA:O ... to get a vial of darkspawn blood. Then I started seeing Origin companion gifts show up in junk loot. I thought it was great.

RPGs have had vendor trash to turn in for gold since they were pen&paper. Alternative is to have kobolds who carry wallets full of loose change :P

Like there was any purpose to Worn Darkspawn Boots or Small Wooden Shield other than as a conduit for money. That part of the game has always sucked 9 ways to sundown so why you want to fiddle with that nonsense other than an OCD that needs heavy medication. There's a ton of not junk you get rewarded with for exploring - I've got swarms of rings, daggers, bows, amulets and shields that are useful potentially that let those of you who think fiddling with inventory makes you smart.

I like it.

I feel like a random skeleton would be more likely to carry a "flawed diamond" over a bag of coins.

Oh, come on! As if there weren't tons of completely useless items in DA:O that served no purpose other than to sell to vendors and make money. At least this time around they saved me the pain and annoyance of having to go through every page of my inventory to manually move them to junk before I went to a vendor.

It's not junk.  It's loot.  And the purpose is to fill up your backpack so you have to empty it out.  Since its primary purpose is to sell to merchants, I would rather just have the cash and save the space.

I donno, knowing Bioware, it wouldn't surprise me if one or more of the junk items were actually easter eggs some how.

Huh, I had assumed that some of those junk items would be used as quest items, for crafting or as gifts. Now I'm reading here that they are just saleable loot and that is all.

I already thought this game was utter rubbish. Now I find that it is even more rubbish than I already thought. Incredible. I feel robbed.

THE biggest aspect of an RPG is lore, always has been, always will be. Adding description to junk could be used to present lore to the players. Kinda like how oblivion had those notes that were pointless but added a sense of atmosphere.

You will read it at least once if they didn't have the "Sell All Junk" button.
