It's the best Bioware game I've played since Neverwinter Nights (which was mostly good because of the toolset, mind). It's not the best RPG I've played (Planescape Torment and Deus Ex have this distinction IMO) and certainly not the best game I've played either (sort of an ex-aequo standing between Syndicate, Planescape: Torment and Final Fantasy 6 for me where whatever I'm most nostalgic about at any given time is the one on top) but it's pretty high up there.

I could understand why Bioware fans might be up in arms, though, because Baldur's Gate was boring IMO (though this could be because by the time I got around to playing it even PS:Torment was hopelessly dated graphically, and unlike Torment it just doesn't have enough quality in the scenario and gameplay to make it worthwhile to force yourself to play through in spite of it) and DA:O suffered much from being too much like those old school (read: obsolete) RPGs in my mind.

"Dragon Age 2" does not beat "Origins" when you look at exploration and character depth. But as many has expressed earlier,  "It's impossible to please everybody:blush:

One of the problems with DA2 that many have (me as well), is that the game does not invite you to travel the land like it did in Origins, but only the city of "Kirkwall" and then raid the same 5 dungeons repeativly -_-

The Characters are uninteresting and only one or two of them catch your attention while the rest is just fall falt from start  :?

The good things is that combat is MUCH better this time and the UI works well . Most PC gamers hates it because this game main focus was clearly the console users and not the PC and that hurts a few hardcore fans on the PC platform I bet :pinched:

Kirkwall is boring after a few hours and even after the first year the city looks pretty much the same (well it is a city and not a forest) and that is just bad level design and choice <_<

18 months on a sequel? I do not know if this a EA idea of just a VERY BAD MOVE by Bioware, but the future does not look too bright if this is the way they will make games from this point :crying:

DA2 is not a bad game, but this is a 6-7 out of 10. Sorry bioware but this is not the game of the year this time

To answer OP's question: DA 2 is bad compared to DA:O

DA 2 is a slap in the face of DA:O fans as Fallout 3 was a slap in the face of Fallout 1 and 2 fans.

You know a game is bad when most of the threads on the forums are statements about how bad the game is instead of questions on how to beat the game.

As a sequel to Origins, it is appalling in my opinion. I would give it a score of 6/10.
If you forget that it's "Dragon Age", I would give it a 7/10. Mediocre, nothing more.

I found myself baffled that I didn't even like the story or most of the characters. I was, before the release, really looking forward to Hawke's rise to power in Kirkwall, thinking that his personal story would be good. But although the game takes place over 10 years, I just can't feel it. Nothing really changes (except for some very minor things), they could as well tell me that it has been a couple of weeks. In the end, I began thinking that the 10-year story thing was just a petty trick to re-use Kirkwall/Sundermount/Wounded Coast areas 3 times.

In the future, they should design some aspects of the PC version and console versions seperately.  I play PC, so I loved Origins, and am highly dissapointed at the console style combat this time around.  I simply have no desire for it, and it's hard to work with on PC.

They should focused on strategy for PC, improving but keeping the Origins combat and overhead tactical view option. They could still do the fast paced, flashy, simplified version of combat for the consoles.  While it's true you can't make everyone happy, you can at LEAST address the basic undeniable differences between console interface and PC interface and stop trying to fit the square peg through the round hole.

So far (halfway through Act II maybe) it seems better than the first game, and vastly better than Mass Effect 2.

To say that this game even deserves to wipe mass effect 2's ass is being nice. It's horrible avoid.

On the note of the subject. Ive enjoyed a bit more than Mass effect 2, less than Origins. All. Rate high in my book though.

I think it stinks. I'm quite surprised it came from bioware, usually they release much better games than this garbage.

As a sequel relative to DA:O it is incredibly sub-par. As a stand alone game it is merely average. However since it was hailed as a sequel and advertised as such, it should merit comparision to its predecessor and not in isolation.

Dragon age 2 can be a different thing to different people. I downloaded the demo today for an outlook
and the result of my experience was... I started the game with an open, clear unbiased mind without any pre-judgments with 100% intent on experiencing and exploring which I did. I played until "Hawke" got to level 3 and had to close the game as I couldn't find any reason nor felt anything to continue. Basicaly, from start to quit, my state didn't change.

Empty + no substance = Ultimate boredom (For Me Exclusively).

I apologize if I don't really have anything to say about it.

Dragon Age 2 is a terrible game, less freedom, less choice, weaker storyline. Hopefully DA3 is never released if it follows suit.

I honestly liked DA2, The story did seem weak in comparison to DA:O but the combat was by far better done. If i could have anything i would of wished that DA2's story was written a tad better and the game extended, as it stands i dont really wish to bash what is still a pretty good game.

In terms of DA:O v DA2, i'd go with DA:O i honestly loved that game more than any other :<

Hi,

To be honest, DA2 is not that bad, while some parts of DA2 are better than DAO, there are flaws that make it not as good as it could have been. The biggest problem is probably the repeated use of dungeons and the removal of tactical camera on the PC version.

To give you an idea about where DA2 stands: I would give DAO 9.1/10, and DA2 8.7/10, and Mass Effect 2 9.7/10

Characters feel somewhat flat and boring, gameplay is boring, companions ignore tactics you set for them. Anders reminds me of Warhammer online dps Archmages, he rarely healed anyone....the entire game looks like a medieval version of ME2, and for me its just a disappointment after the excellent 1st part.
edit; what someones said on last page, it lacks the soul of DAO...a massacred game, imo, worth playing just to kill time. I actually ended it 1st time wihout bothering with any sidequests in chapter 3....

I have been playing games developed by bioware since the very beginning... Baldur's Gate, etc will always remain those 'classic' rpg titles which really inspired me. So I think I have good experience in playing Bioware titles.

Unfortunately, with DA2, Bioware have seriously shown just how money minded they have become... The major improvement is the battle system... but for the rest... there is a lot missing.

1) The DA2 story is not bad... but it gets repetitive after some time. The characters in your party are pretty boring, and the game is just loaded with bugs... worst one being the Fenris Bitter Pill quest.
2) Dragon Age 1 had a vast area to explore and travel around. Dragon Age 2 you start getting sick of playing all the time in Kirkwall. Kirkwall here... kirkwall there... blehhh...
3) Graphically it feels exactly the same as DA1, even though god bless the main character speaks. But in my opinion Mass Effect 2 has waayyy better graphics than this.
4) And lets talk about the infamous 'Special Items' you get via the preorder and 'signature' edition... wow... fantastic items... pity by Act 2 most of them are absolute rubbish and you end up using the actual game items.
5) Sebastian's quest is very short. Should have been longer in my opinion.
6) Don't bother with a custom builder tool. We don't want another Kirkwall to quest in.

I loved DA:O and even he expansion... but this one has really let me down. Hope you manage to improve my views on Bioware when you finally decide to launch SWTOR... if you actually launch it sometime this century.

Bioware... what the hell happened to you?!?!?

As a PC user, my comment may already be biased i suppose, since i ADORED the tactical gameplay of Origins. Combat on PC is slightly ungainly, because it is designed to cater to live action (though the pause button is always there), but on pc, with a mouse, it is incredibly difficult to play in real time trying to constantly CC, re target adds etc etc. So constant pausing is the way to go (which i'm ok with, just combat seems a bit on the fence on PC).

In my opinion, the problems with this game are:

EXTREMELY weak storyline. I mean wait, IS there even a storyline? You sort of show up in Kirkwall then start doing odd jobs for random people. Then you go into the deep roads, find a singing statue and you do more odd jobs. The companions... well. The only three which had a personality of any note were Meryl, Isabela and Varic ... Sebastian - dull, Aveline - dull, Fenris - dull. Oh and Anders ..... COMEON! In Awakening, Anders was brilliant ! The initial meeting in Vigil's Keep with him blasting a darkspawn to a cinder with the words ,'Ugh...i didn't do it...' was priceless! Instead he gets replaced with a monotonous voice actor and his lines are boring and serious and only ever revolve around 'revenge on the templars blah blah blah' (I DID, however, like the incorporation of Justice as a kindof doppelganger in Awakening because i did quite like him). So even Anders is now dull.
Also, there is no epicness to the game. In the first one, you had the overwhelming task of defeating the Archdemon as the ultimate goal. DA2 has nothing. Don't even get me started on the dungeons. It would appear that instead of putting in some effort, dungeons are simply copy and paste with slightly varying demons + bandits in them..... and the areas. Unbelievably dull. Your in either Kirkwall, Sundermount or the Wounded Coast. Oh so imaginative, oh so boring.

My final rant : Nightmare. So for example, when I bought Golems of Amgarrak, I had a nasty little shock when i jumped straight in on nightmare on my tank warrior when i met Orsino ugh i mean the Harvester (nice one there btw Bioware, copy and pasting the harvester's model into Orsino boss fight in which, if u side with the mages, makes absolutely NO SENSE anyway!). But after trial and error i changed my tactics, and eventually i took him down on nightmare. Dragon Age 2 Nightmare = nearly immortal adds with inhumane damage and absolutely MILLIONS of reinforcements...So instead of incorporating tactics into the AI so that strategies can be created after wipes, instead EVERY pull takes about 10 minutes and you have to repetitively kite adds the entire time to prevent your party from dying in 2 hits, then you have to do it all over again as a new set of even stronger adds either materialise out of thin air, jump off 30 foot roofttops to the floor, or come down on ropes connected to the clouds. It is just silly if i'm totally honest : / I could, if i REALLY wanted to, complete this game on nightmare simply by pausing every two seconds to order my tank to run away so the adds are kited EVERY PULL, but if i'm totally honest, what is really the point? It's not fun, it's laborious and it feels cheesy...a templar in full heavy plate mail jumps off a 2 story building and lands right next to you ... Benny Hill???

Anyway, at least the new combat animations are nice..

Felt the same about the demo.

Starting out fighting, did some more fighting and ended up fighting. Well, I quit before I repeated steps one and two.

But opinions and tastes are personal. If someone is unsure about getting the game, download the demo and see if it appeals.
