Is there any chance that there are any spells or runes to buff the little guy up?
I mean i'm playing nightmare and he's only doing like 6 damage or somewhere in the 20s if he's lucky and as a meatbag he ain't that great sinds my lvl 8 warrior can kill it in 4/5 hits accidently.
Question about the mabari wardog.

Oh man, I don't think I will ever touch Nightmare.
I don't believe that there is a way to upgrade the dog. He has no web nor rune slots. I think he draws a lot of threat, though, because I was fighting the Varteraal and even though my warrior was doing more damage than him, the Varteraal kept on going for the dog.

Sadly from everything I've experienced there's no way to use runes or spells to buff him up (perhaps things like Heroic Aura and the like might benefit him, but I somehow doubt it as it doesn't even appear to count him as being in your party, just simply an NPC that follows and helps you).
I'm a little disappointed with it, but honestly I keep him alive constantly to provide what little damage he does... and surprisingly, sometimes foes will go out of their way to attack him instead of a different party member (usually not the case, however) but he doesn't really cost anything and isn't sustained, so there's no real downside to having him up, even if he only does six damage throughout the entire game.

On nightmare he's a fire-immune distraction and not much more, as far as I can tell.

The Mabari was meant to really be much of a fighter in this game. Only time he really came in handy for me was distracting the Aristok while dueling him as a rogue.

I wonder if he's related to Barkspawn from DAO?
