Hi guys, eh I'm at the end of act 1 now and kind of stuck at the companion quest "talk to Anders". I mean, I got a male Hawke and want to go for a friendship with Anders. But from the choices I have seen (I have been going though them a few times now, at least), you either have to go for the heart option and initiate romance with him(which is definitly NOT what I want to do) or broke his heart and get rivalry points. So here's my question, is it possible to  get friendly points without taking the romance option? Thank you!

Omg, thank you for posting this. I'm on my second playthrough, and I want to romance Fenris this time - but it's hard because Anders outright flirts with you in the beginning and I'm like: "NOOO STOP ENCHANTING ME." *hides*

When you cut him off with the red response right away you won't lose anything.

The only options I've ever gotten were "flirt or be a jackass". I've had to be a jackass to both Fenris and Anders because I didn't want to romance either. There needs to be a "let down gently" button.

And this is when he first flirts with you, yes?

No, straight away after he finishes the "I had a friend like you once", it will end the conversation with no rivalry gain.

I haven't talk to Fenris a lot, but I don't remember having the same problem with him.

But in general, I agree with you. It is not easy to pursue a friendship without being a flirt these days...

Yeah Anders is about the only character in DA2 where I felt backed into a corner between choosing flirt or just crushing his approval.

I think with just about all the other character I could just glide by the flirt options if I wasn't interested.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. I like Anders a lot, so it's hard to brush past the flirtations. But I will romance Fenris, goddamnit. Rivalry romance.

When I gave Fenris his first gift my choices were: flirt, be a "charming" jackass, or be a real jackass. I chose to be a "charming" jackass, but the whole situation just irked me.

Yup, I was just about to post this example. My Lady Hawke was in a full-on relationship with Anders at the time (had done the "deed" and he'd agreed to move in, etc.), so I wasn't going to be a jerk-off and flirt with some other dude. So, was forced to take a rivalry hit for trying to be nice. Though, actually, both gift options for Fenris stink. I gave him both, trying to be nice, and they both just ended up ticking him off.

Fine, then. I know who's coming off the Christmas gift list for next year... LOL

Yeah, a friendship seems kind of tricky with Anders. It's easy for Fenris, but even if you don't deliberately choose flirt lines, Anders will still say something like, "so under that scruffy exterior, I think you've got a bit of a soft heart yourself" and asks if he's making you uncomfortable. Maybe the sarcastic options are the best way to avert it? Or just turn him down and risk a bit of rivalry points. If you want to go down the friendship path, there will be more opportunities to gain friendship points anyway.

Okay...I hate the way you turn Anders down. "Keep your personal issues to yourself"? Dang, can't there be a gentle, non-hypocritical way of turning someone down? *sigh* Well, friendship points ahoy.

Actually, while trying all different options, I found a way to get +5 approval and it appears to turn him down. If you choose the "nice body" option, he goes into his "me and Karl" speech. Choose the option where investigate usually is. Hawke should ask " You...and Karl?". Anders should then say something along the lines that he always thought love was about the person, so what if they are like you. he then asks does it bother Hawke, to which you reply yes. Anders says "fine, I get it. Strictly professional", but you still get a +5 friendship.

I don't know seems much more gentle than the option mentioned by Avalla'ch.

I completely missed that dialogue option with Anders, no clue how, since I am always so thorough with dialogue. Anyway, in my case, it went straight to "I had a friend like you once..." and the only options I had were two hearts and a broken heart. I chose "This is a little sudden" (middle, heart), and he replied he'd break my heart. After that, I never chose any other flirt options with him, and he never hit on my FmageHawke either. I got him to full friendship and am happily romancing Fenris, who is also at max friendship :)

It's not, my fem!mage got that option too.

I'll say, Anders was just waaaay too fitting for my mage character. Isabela is a hooker-pirate, Fenris is a hater, Merrill is like the naive little sister with no idea how ****ty life can be outside her own little world. Varric would have been awesome though, sarcastic Hawke + Varric in your party gives a lot of dialogue gems.

Nah, I had that option as well as a femHawke, I just didn't choose it. Instead I went for the diplomatic answer, and was then pigeonholed into the two hreats and one broken heart option. But, yep, afterwards, I had no trouble w/ Anders. At least I didn't have to beat him back with a stick like I did w/ Leliana and Zevran.

Warden: Always happy to help.
Leliana: I LOVE YOU!!!

Haha! I always loved the Conversation when Leliana had to force herself into the party(mind you, I never had to in my playthrough because she was my romance pick):

"Warden: "Alistair, she's one Archdemon short of a blight."
   Alistair
: "Yes, but she seems more... "Ooh, pretty colors!" than "Muahaha! I am Princess Stabbity! Stab, kill, kill!""
