hiya, i'm have some major problems trying to get some of the companions to full friend or rival.
I want all of my companions to be one or the other but i'm not getting much of anywhere.

So i was hoping someone somewhere has made a guide on how to interact with them and get what you want.

if not any help would be usefull.

Agreed. Mostly I can't figure out Fenris- half the things I do get friend points and half get rivalry, so I end up stuck in the middle (I'm anti-slavers but pro-mage).

I'd love a feastday gifts. I mean, I do love the gift system they have, but seriously, just one or two gifts? That's a little low. I fear that I'll end up doing a lot of things people agree with, and a lot they don't, so I'll end up with like, 10 friendship or rivalry with everyone. We spend years together and they feel almost nothing for me, that's just sad.

I'm curious if eventually people will start picking things up for the Dragon Age wiki, kind of how there was an Approval Guide for DA:O and A.

After 20 hours of playing, I'm just starting Act 2 so I'm not sure how things will play out Friendship/Rivalry wise. I was able to Friendship Bethany, and took her almost everywhere in Act 1. My Protective-of-Bethany Hawke is nearly at full Friendship with Anders, whom I also brought everywhere and generally was nice to mages.

I learned to leave Aveline in the Barracks when I went on rogue-oriented missions since she didn't like being an accomplice to anything seedy. Elsewise she's been pretty agreeable to the Paragon-esque options I've chosen.

Isabella is a little hard to read but generally gives Friendship points either by siding with Anders or doing favors for anyone she introduces me to.

Fenris I noticed has a scene if you take him to the Gallows where siding with Anders will result in +15 Rivalry. I got friendship points earlier for being nice to him I think so I'm not sure how to go about it.

I got Merrill very late in Act 1 and left her in her house after I saw she uses Blood Magic. I like her personality but not Blood Mages, and right now her Friendship meter hasn't moved yet.

Varric seems pretty easy going and not very concerned about him.

I'm most concerned about Fenris/Merrill - I'm assuming if I'm pro-mage I'll have to just bring them along and side with Anders to get them to full Rival?

Here you go. There's some unadded portions near the second and third page.

Also overall, Fenris can be easy you just agree with his hatred of mages, hate slavers, never compares mages to slaves, and try not to baby him alot, he's pretty independent. If you do well, you get to drink with him later. He also understands the Qun, but doesn't follow it.

I don't have a specific guide, but here's what I use as a general rule of thumb for each.

For friendship (and for rivalry do the opposite):

Fenris - Be anti-mage and anti-slavers

Anders - Be anti-templar and pro-mage

Isabela - Ask for money from people whenever possible. She also tends to lean on the pro-mage side. (you can get a TON of friendship points in The Hanged Man at the beginning of Act 2 just by being flirty with her.)

Merril - Just be nice basically. (and you can get a TON of rivalry if you refuse to help her with the mirror)

Varric - Again just be nice to people and try to help out whenever possible and this seems to get his friendship up.

Aveline - Basically just try to keep the peace.

Bethany - Be pro-mage and nice.

Carver - Be pro-templar. (it's really hard to get his friendship up no matter what you do though.)

Sebastian - Be nice to the Grand Cleric and anyone religious (including templars)

The offical DA2 guide released by Piggyback SOMETIMES has hints for getting max rivalry/friendship out of your companions during certain missions. For example, it tells you in 'An Errant Letter', if you spare the templar the grusome truth of his daughter, you will expect a friendship boost from your companions (With the exception of Fenris).

On one of my playthroughs I managed to get every companion at full friendship. It takes some careful management of who you have in your party at certain times but it is doable. I found its easier to pre-plan who to leave out of which quests by going through a guide/quest list or making notes on an initial playthrough if you can't find anything like that.

Fenris friendship is doable on a mage friendly playthrough. I've done it. Trick for him is to leave him out of quests that involve being friendly to the mages. On pro templar, take him along on the templar friendly quests. Give him all gifts, and just be nice/understanding during his quests/conversations.

Anders is pretty easy to friendship on a pro-mage playthrough. On a Templar friendly playthrough, leave him out of templar friendly quests. Give gifts, be nice/understanding, etc. etc.

Isabela is interesting to try to befriend. I found the trick for gaining friendship with her is to select the purple humor/charm dialogue whenever speaking to her. Also, don't have qualms about taking quests like the Finders Keepers quest and giving the merchandise location to him. Needless to say, leave out Aveline, as she won't like doing the unlawful quests.

Aveline. I found that she seems to be pro-templar. She also doesn't approve of doing quests that Isabela approves of, so I found it easier to just leave her out of much of the game until I had the other companions maxed out.

Merrill. She's pro mage, like Anders and Bethany. But most of the trick to friending her is to select the green diplomatic dialogue options when speaking with her to get her where you want her. Also, you'll need to give her the aruli'n holm during the Mirror Image quest, otherwise she'll get massive rivalry increases from then on.

Sebastian.. well he seems to be pro-templar. I found that taking him along on Anders's Compainion quests made Sebastian gain rivalry, so I left him out.

Varric.. he's pretty easygoing. I found that using the purple humor/charm dialogue worked well with him.

Basically my trick was to get the Companions I cared about most at their maximum friendship before taking on anyone else. I usually started with Isabela, Bethany, and Varric in my party, then worked my way around to the others, usually leaving Aveline, Merrill, and Sebastian for last. I haven't really tried to rival any of them yet, except for this playthrough I'm trying to rival Anders, which needs careful planning as well. But I found the best trick is if I don't like how something played out friendship/rival-wise, I'd try to load the closest save point and try again. That, and careful planning of party members during quests helps too.

There's a pretty comprehensive approval guide in the Isabela FAQ linked in my sig... but that's only for Isabela. I've had a few requests to do that for everybody, but... I'm kind of lazy.

I've already done a guide for Act 1 - on this forum actually - and will have similar guides for Acts 2 and 3 completed in the next few days. I'll bump it for ya right now.
