So it seems that at the end of the game no matter who you side with all the mages around the world revolt and fight for their freedom. So does that mean its inevitable that they will be freed from the Templars regardless of who you side with or what? What do you think?

Yeah I sided with Templars in one playthrough and it says the mages rise up and revolt as well.
So they do thew same thing regardless of either choice you make. So it sort of seems an inevitability they will get their freedom?

I did not want to pick a side... but I have to. With Bethany alive I sided with the Mages, on this next playthrough with Carver alive I might side with the Templars despite being a Mage myself. But the schism happens... Anders' and Meredith's actions result in Open Rebellion. The Chantry is now sundered across the whole of Thedas. Now instead of a ready army of loyal Circle Mages and Templars there are now hordes of Apostates and a weakened Templar force, so that leaves very little in the way for Flemeth and Morrigan's plans.

Seems like whatever you do the Mages start to revolt. Like choosing sides has no real meaning at all, huh?

Well, let's see if there'll be another installment in the future to clear everyone's confusion.

It's inevitable that they will revolt it is *not* inevitable that they will win.

Helping the mages obtain freedom is far more likely to be accomplished by Hawke if he has templar favor, which can only be obtained by siding with them really. I mean all those mages in Kirkwall are likely to die anyway after assuming control of the city as they would be resented by the people for the chantry being blown up by that idiot anders, and with Hawke unable to become Viscount without the templars as the Seneshal points out. he couldn;t establish any alliances to defend against the approaching Exalted March. Siding with the mages seems a really bad choice to me

Not necessarily. It is strongly implied that Templar favor helps to secure a Viscount's standing but, if there are NO Templars because the mages wiped them out, then the new Viscount won't need Templar support as much as mage support. Similarly, with only the City Guard to protect the citizens they aren't likely to try to kill any mages, especially if they go maleficarum on the citizenry's butts or while wiping out the Templars. Even a mob would have a really difficult time kililng a maleficarum. And this is assuming they don't create their own loyal units of guards bound by magic or greed or status to the mages. Think a mini Tevinter Imperium.

Meh yeah they pretty much do reguardless, if you want to see what true freedom is and means, look at Somalia. Or as a rather humorus map called it "Libertarian's wet dream" Its just mages are the only one's with AK-47's and RPG's.

He didn't side with the mages so much as he turned the Templars against Meredith.

Damnit I wish they wouldn't leave us in the dark though about whether or not our actions will decide who comes out on top

Why would being a pawn of the templars and slaughtering innocents be better for mages? The title of Viscount means nothing when the Templars are the ones who rule Kirkwall. Better to side with the enslaved than their oppressors, XxDeonxX.

Your choices do matter - just not for the main plot.  You have opportunities throughout the game to help people with sidequests, and during Acts 2 and 3 you start getting letters thanking you for what you did.

This is ordinary for an RPG.  Your imported save doesn't track whether or not you killed the archdemon because that's the primary plot for DAO and the archdemon is going to die no matter what.  Similarly, in DA2 Meredith and Orsino are both going to die no matter what.  But just as was the case in DAO (where you helped influence who became the new ruler of Fereldan), your decision in DA2 influences whether or not you end up on the throne of Kirkwall.  Support the Templars and you become the new ruler.  Support the mages and the Templars wisely stand aside as you walk out of the city (after Meredith has been transformed, of course).

But to my understanding even if you become ruler of Kirkwall you still end up disappearing just as the warden has. It may have impact that you stayed on the throne for a short time, but that's just speculation.

That is probably what DA3 will be for.   Now if it was a war of templars vs mages only then I would bet large on the mages to win.  Problem is these types of wars tend to go on and on and on with no real winner just a bunch of losers and I doubt it would be a 1v1 fight.

Precisely. Most likely rulers, nations, even family members will need to choose sides. It's going to be a looooong and bloody war. This is all also assuming the Qunari and unstable Orlais don't go to hell or get all invasion happy while this ware rages. Not likely.

i had a mage warden in origins and, naturally, i asked for freedom of the ferelden mages. They gave it to me and it was even confirmed by the hanged man bartender (even though he siad it would be a disaster). But by the time this whole templar/mage war starts going, my mages have had freedom for the past 9 years or whatever it is. I just assume nothing goes wrong with it because noone else mentions anything about except for the aforementioned bartender and when Meredith was talking to king Alistair about it, just saying how they reat mages diffrently.

So whatever goes down in DA3 my ferleden mages have a head start on everyone.

BTW if nothing went bad with my mages ud think Orsino would have cited them in any of his speeches

The mages would rebel no matter what. This was something you couldn't stop and reasonably sound. You aren't expected to stop everything from collapsing at your feet. Choosing a side still affects your relations with that group. You are still a mortal cast aside in a crazy religious war. You can only do so much.
