I guess it depends, really.

When I first started the game, I was a bit turned off by the amount of blood splattering all over, even by tickling a few rats. However, I got used to it rather quickly, and while I still find it to be immature and silly, it doesn't bother me anymore.

Now, the romances are a very nicely done thing in DA. Until you get to the sex scenes, which are... well, just not very well done, partly because of this ridiculous underwear. Considering that the game features excessive amounts of blood and does more than just hint at quite diverse sexual behavior, it is - for me at least - not really understandable why Bioware decided to make those scenes the way they did. What makes it worse is the fact, that it is not even consistent. Morrigan doesn't wear a bra, except for this one scene. Ironically it even covers more than her usual clothes.

So, it does indeed ruin the atmosphere of the romance plot in a similiar way as does splattering blood when killing a few rats. Not because you don't get to see bare breasts or whatever, but because it's simply inconsistent and not believable. It is not even consistent within the game itself, as one could hardly argue that - for example, there are many more - visiting brothels is okay while showing bare breasts is not. Or just look at  the City Elf Origin.

But RPGs are about believability, are they not?

Of course, it's not a major issue. Still, how game companies handle this specific subject has always bugged me (in relation to the often exaggerated way of portraying violence), and considering that there are a multitude of ways to handle such things, there is really no excuse for the "solution" chosen in DA. It's cheap and what's more, it's absurdely unnecessary within the games own frame of handling sex.

I don't buy games look at "nude" characters, that would be really sad.

I admit that your reasoning about Morrigan is correct, but I don't think that wearing a bra or not is enough to ruin the atmosphere. Plus, if you search around about it, there was a guy who found out that Morrigan has a full nude texture for her body, so probably Bioware had to make a decision about if they were going to include nudity or not. Obviously, there were more pro's at covering those "bits" than the opposite. But really, it's nothing a bit of modding cannot fix if you feel that ruins your experience (as far as I know, there are some nude mods already). So I think this post and others claiming for the same leads nowhere, since Bioware's point of view about this fact is not going to change and, as seen, only leads to pointless discussion.

You are probably right, of course. And as I said, it's by no means a game breaker. I don't care for a mod either, those ten seconds are not THAT important. Concerning the gaming experience itself, It bugs me in much the same way as those blood balloon rats.

Still, it's a topic that should be discussed nontheless. It won't change much for Dragon Age Origins, but maybe for future titles. Considering how this topic is handled in other games (even those by Bioware) and how excessive portraying of violence has become fashionable, it is one of the last barriers that need to fall to eliminate hypocrisy in the RPG genre. Especially when it comes to self-appointed mature games. There is absolutely no reason why there should be different "rules" for games than for movies.

Just take a look at "The Witcher" for instance. Noone would say that it's handled in any way pornographic or tasteless there. Quite the contrary, it adds flavor instead of taking it away (even though the hero Geralt may be quite a nymphomaniac...).

It is very strange when you stop and think about it, I can't begin to think why society has ended up like this because its not just games where violence or showing pictures of dead bodies on the 6 o'clock news is acceptable yet a topless woman streaking at a football match would need to be censored.

I'm not sure but I understood the alleged sex scenes to show the cuddling before and after the fact. It's not entirely unrealistic to wear clothes for that... at least you don't really have to take them off for technical reasons if you're just cuddling.



It is a bit ridiculous though, there is blood splattering about throughout the entire game and you can get she-male prostitutes, you'd think a little straight nudity couldn't possibly be worse than that. Not that I'd particularly want to see any of my characters naked, it's their business after all.

You have all missed ESRB's point as to why violence is okay, boobs, are not...



If you portray sex in a video game, and video games are made for children regardless of the 18+ stamp, children will mimic what they see and have sex, thus eroding social standards...



The same cannot be said for violence, as ESRB knows full well children never commit acts of brutish, senseless violence.







Don't blame BW or EA, they're are stuck playing by other peoples rules, and all out sex scene would not go over well with any marketing this game. Sony has stated they will not endorse any game that would be, X-rated (not certain the term they used), I doubt MS would be willing either.



This is why we have modders for PC versions. Hopefully something tasteful is made. I personally think BW did a good job setting the mood for lovescenes, the music is rather nice...



Any chance we could get a patch to close Morrigan's eyes when she kisses? That always bugs me...Oh and boobs!!...(sry, couldn't help me self)

I don't have a problem, personally, with underwear during the love scenes, but I really strongly wish characters had -different- -underwear-. Primarily Morrigan. She is very clearly never wearing any kind of a bra the majority of the time, but when she goes to have sex with someone, suddenly she puts one on.



If the devs don't want her to be nude, then her outfit should have had a redesign, or she should have had some kind of undergarment that didn't completely contradict the outfit she's pretty much always wearing. The fact that all character models, be they dwarven commoners or human nobles, wear the exact same underthings just seems....Odd. Still, it's pretty minor in the face of everything else in the game, for me.

I saw those - they have characters running around nude all the time, which isn't what I and other people on this thread want.

People are only asking for nude to be actually nude, and for the character to appear clothed when wearing clothes and/or armour. As of yet, no patch exists that does both.

Most people here don't give a rats about having nudity nor is that really the issue. It's the stupidity of the scene and the hypocrisy of their "tastes" that's being discuessed and debated, by the few who have actully read more then 3 posts in the thread anyways. And why the "geeky teen looking to get a hard on" insult is being thrown around when most people are saying they'd prefer a blackout scene to what is currently there I don't quite understand.

At the precise moment I cannot work out why this came deserves an 18 rating. The blood and gore is no worse than in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I think what people are objecting to is the fact that it is an obvious cop-out job done pretty badly. Must be an American thing, are your ratings different over there ? Even The Witcher was censored for ages for the American market, no-one knew why as it was an 18-rated game. Just look at what is available in 18-rated movies, are games judged by a different standard then ?
