Inquiry on Ilos

However, most of the status pods were shut down over the years of the
genocide due to power shortages, leaving only a dozen or so scientists
alive. From what we've seen of the facility, it had several thousand
pods for the facility staff. But Ilos was an entire planet, with
sprawling cities located all over. My question is, if the planet was
unaffected by the Reapers, then what happened to the surface population
of what must have been, several million at least? If Ilos was
overlooked, shouldn't the surface people be okay too? What happened to
them?

1) To better hide from the Reapers, AND
2) They didn't have the means to survive on their own but for a limited time

are you sure that Ilos had millions of protheans living there? ...i understand that the planet was actualy used for only 1 super science facility and all of them worked in that facility in big secret so i think that was not a colony
It actually says in the codex for Ilos about the cities.

Like the ancient human city of Troy, Ilos is a world known only through second-hand sources. References to Ilos have been found at several other Prothean ruins, though direct study of the world is unlikely to occur.
Ilos lies in a remote area of the Terminus Systems only accessible by the legendary Mu Relay.
Four thousand years ago, the Mu Relay was knocked out of position by a
supernova and lost. Since then, Ilos and its cluster have been
inaccessible.
Occasionally, a university will organize an expedition to chart a route to Ilos using conventional FTL
drive. These never get beyond the planning stages due to the distance
and danger. The journey could take years or decades, passing through the
hostile Terminus Systems and dozens of unexplored systems.
I don't see any mention of "cities" and it is possible that the only location inhabitied by Protheans on Ilos was the facility. Considering Feros, for example, which seems only to have the ExoGeni Corporation buildings (I could be wrong, but that's all I remember hearing a mention about), it's possible that they didn't inhabit most of the planet, just a location for the science facility.

Sorry it was in the mass effect wiki.
In the golden age of the Protheans, Ilos[/b] was a verdant world, dotted with the spires and arches of magnificent cities. Even casual observation shows this is no longer the case. Ilos has been devastated by means unknown, its entire surface changed to the color of rust. The atmosphere shows heightened levels of oxygen. Wildfires, presumably ignited by lightning strikes, can be seen burning on the dark side. This indicates that most –— if not all — respiring animal life forms have died off.

Haven't played Mass Effect 1 for a while, but ain't that exactly the Planet Info Description InGame? Especially about the surface turned the color of rust and fires that probably ignited by lightning strikes rings a bell that tolds me I've read these lines ingame at the planets description of Ilos.
