What ports do i need to open up on my firewall for this game to connect on the PC? I found an article in their support base for ports on the Xbox (3074 and 88), and opened those up, but it didn't help.

Also tried 8000, 8001, as the manual suggested for both UDP and TCP (and 80 is already open of course, or I wouldn't be typing on these forums :P ) Still says I'm not online.

Dooo ta dooooooooooo....

Ok, question has been on the forums for two weeks, and has been submitted to tech support for over a week and still no one at bioware can tell me what ports need to be open on my firewall?

Epic fail.

Worst tech support ever. No answer on forums, no answer from my emailed question. I JUST NEED SOME FRIGGIN PORT NUMBERS.

I was all excited about SWTOR, but now I'm thinking I won't waste a dime on it.

Just so you know, these forums are 'self-help' forums, and not officially supported by BioWare/EA - basically you failed more here than they did with your rant in regards to no answers from official sources to your original post (the email one is perfectly valid though). You can try contacting EA at their chat support over at http://help.dragonage.com/chat and see if they can help you faster there perhaps.

Dragon Age: Origins PC Technical Support
This forum is for fans and owners of Dragon Age: Origins to assist each other with technical questions. Official game support is provided by Electronic Arts, but fans are encouraged to try to assist each other here.

Also, I'm sorry that I can't help you on this issue, as I don't know wich ports are required (I just allow all of my games full access to the net with DMZ settings). It might also be possible that you can search something out from http://help.dragonage.com on the search term "firewall"?

Yes, I realize they are self help forums. I guess I also failed by emailing their support and believing the "You should hear back within 24 hours" crap. 9 days, no answer from email. Two weeks, no on one forums even knows what port numbers the game uses, and I see new questions about it almost every day. Nothing about it in their online support database. I guess we are all fail idiots with the same problem and shouldn't pester bioware with our problems in their email support, and certainly shouldn't complain about them on the boards.

No, that is nowhere near what I wrote. You can complain and 'pester' them all you want on these forums if you so choose, but it will be to deaf ears--and it sounded more like you weren't aware of these forums being self-help with the complaints in regards to the topic being unanswered by BioWare. Like I wrote, your point about not having any answers on your email from EA within 9 days is perfectly valid, and shows a very poor customer service (wich is sadly so common these days when it comes to email support..). Like I tried suggesting, go for the chat support (since that's free, rather than calling) over at http://help.dragonage.com/chat (but my experience is that it takes too long for me to want to wait around 30mins to get questions answered for minor issues I can play with anyways).

I guess as a last solution, one could set up a 'port sniffer' (part of some routers interface by default) to find out wich specific ports DA:O uses. Some firewall software provide logs on what it allows and blocks too, wich should list IP's and ports being used.

Again, I am aware these are "self help forums". Which (note the correct spelling), in my opinion, is yet another fail of Bioware. There should be official tech support forums like 99% of other games on the market, not a "dump you over here to sort out your own problems" forums. Another failing would be the daily posts on the same problem on these forums and no one having a solution. Surely others that have posted about this problem have also submitted support requests, yet no one seems to be getting the answer.  "Self help" or not, Bioware should be aware that people are posting the same problem here daily and getting zero help on it. "Selp help" should not mean, "ignore our customer bases' problems".

It's great that you are an apologist for their lack of customer service on these forums and all, but seriously, this is just stupid. I am currently trying their live chat thing, I've been first place in the queue for about 40 minutes, the ETA has counted down to zero (well, actually it stopped at 40 seconds, but that has long since past) and I'm still waiting.

Frankly, I think potential customers need to know how terrible their customer service is and would benefit from my whiney ranting on it :)

Here's the results:

Mark: Hi, my name is Mark. How may I help you?
Mark: Are you there?
: hi
: sorry, was tabbed out
Mark: OK
: I cannot log in while in game, it says I'm not online, though I clearly am :P
: I'm guessing it is my firewall, but I'm not sure what port numbers the game uses. The manual says 80, 8000, and 8001, so I set those up on TCP and UDP, but that didn't help.
Mark: Which Platform are you using? PC, Xbox, PS3..
: PC
Mark: Are you having the issue with dragon age or you are not able to access EA Server for any game?
: Dragon Age is the only EA game I'm playing right now. I've got a few MMOs that seem to work fine after I added their port numbers in.
Mark: I hope you have registered your game in http://social.biowar...m/user_home.php
: pretty sure i did.
Mark: OK
: I can get on fine on my home PC, but at my office i cannot. I've got a pretty hard core firewall here. I really just need to know what port numbers the game uses. I put in an email support request over a week ago on this and still haven't heard back.
Mark: OK
Mark: First, be sure to disable any firewalls you have running.

· Software firewalls can simply be turned off, usually by right clicking on the icons near your clock and selecting "Close" or "Exit".

· Hardware firewalls should be bypassed by going from the computer directly to your modem, skipping any router you may have.

· Try cycling the Power on your modem. For this, switch off your modem and leave it un-powered for a about 5 minutes then re-start the modem, this should power cycle your modem.

If you have Windows XP, there is a built in Firewall that we will want to disable. Please follow these steps to do so:

· Double click "My Network Places" on your Desktop or in your Start Menu

· Click "View Network Connections"

· Right click on "Local Area Connection" and Select "Properties"

· Click the "Advanced" tab

· Make sure to uncheck the box under "Internet Connection Firewall"
Mark: If you are able to connect after disabling any firewalls you have running, then this is definitely the cause of your trouble. If you wish to play the game with your firewall running, please add the game to exception list of your firewall.
Mark: Connection issues can also be caused by one or more ports being blocked by a firewall, router, or even your Internet Service Provider to help maintain security. These ports are the doorways used to send and receive information between your computer and the server. You must configure your router/firewall to have the game's ports open in order to connect to the servers properly. You may also need to contact your Internet Service Provider to ensure that these ports are opened as well.

TCP: 80, 8000
UDP: 80, 8001
Mark: I hope this helps resolving your issue.

: I've got those ports added to my exception list, and it still says I'm not online when I open the game and hit the "login" button on the bottom left.
: Windows Firewall also has DAO added to the exceptions list.
: there are actually a lot of people complaining about this on the "self help" forums, but I haven't seen any solutions to it yet.
Mark: Have you contacted your Internet Service Provider to ensure that these ports are opened as well.
: Yes, we don't have any ports blocked by our ISP.
Mark: Please stay online while I research further.
Mark: Have you updated with the latest patch for Dragon Age: Origins patch 1.01b.

: yes
Mark: I need to escalate the issue to the senior department for further assistance. You would be responded back within 24 to 48 hours via email.
Mark: I would appreciate your patience in this regard.

: lol, if they actually will, that would be great. like I said, I've had a support ticket in for 9 days on this with not a peep back.

In other words, don't hold your breath.

Ever tried to log the connections your game does when playing on your home PC? Depending on the logging-programm, you'll get your ports pretty fast.

May try that on my home PC tonight. My office network has way too many connections going on to sort through for this.

I'm thinking there is another port the game is using to test the connection to see if you are online or not other than those listed.

Well, from a quick lookup I made a few minutes ago, I found the following ones:
443 (ofc, as this is used for https by default)
9966
9981
18081
49000
65220
62222
65224
62228
65229
Those highnumbered can be ignored in my opinion; I guess that DA chooses them randomly at start-up. So the best bet would be port 443 and the others up to 49000.

Mind if I ask why you need to log in while using your office PC? :>

Compared mine to yours last night and tested it on the office computer this morning. I wasn't getting any of the 65k+ numbers, that must be something else on your box. 18081 is the magic number. You also need 443 unblocked, but I already had that one. The IP it is trying to reach on that port resolves to an EA server. Unblocked that port at the office this morning and it works great :)

As for why I need it at the office.... I'm working on a uhm... top secert project... that tests the effects of uh... me playing DAO in an office environment.

To recap for anyone else having this problem:

You must unblock ports 80 (TCP/UDP), 8000 (TCP), 8001 (UDP), 443 (TCP), and 18081 (TCP) to connect to the DLC stuff.

Yep, I was thinking the same about those high ones. Everything above 49xxx (don't remember exactly) can be used by whatever program for whatever they want it. It got def. used for communication between my machine and EA's servers, as the ip-range was the same (and is owned by EA). Whatever... :>

Though I have to say that Bioware should have clarified earlier what ports need to be opened, as the ones in the manual aren't sufficient. At least we know now.

Your company probably also has a hardware firewall. Have you spoken to the sysadmin about the issue?
