I'd love to know the last name of characters who we aren't told yet. Just because. It doesn't matter but -still-. If we get told what food they are, we should get last names. D:

And in terms of contraceptives, this is where my geeky historian self comes out! There were of course the usual superstitions to keep from getting pregnant even in our own history. Some of them quite hilarious. BUT there was also a plant in Roman/Greek times known as Silphium, which was very stubborn about where it grew, giving Cyrene the monopoly on it. It was so important it was even put on their coins. Problem is, it was also stubborn about REGROWING after being harvested. Eventually, it was believed to be extinct. But plants even in the same family tested now have had around a 50% rate of prevention of pregnancy, with some reaching as high as 70% in some testing. It was believed the ancient plant had an 80-85% chance of successfully preventing pregnancy... not that shabby considering the time period. It's not inconceivable that there would exist plants along this nature in the Dragon Age world, and potions and magic would likely take care of the rest. I don't imagine they would have too much problems preventing pregnancies. Obviously, diseases are another issue and I sincerely doubt they would be able to help pregnancies along if someone was infertile. That'd involve likely more changing of the body than anyone but a blood mage would want to mess with. There's also the old tracking of the days and knowing when to be careful, which women have done for centuries.

Dragon Age only has a medieval LIKE setting. If they didn't go through a 'dark age' period like we did in our own history, which they don't seem to have except maybe for the elves since they have that whole disconnect with their history they can't figure out, then a lot of knowledge would have been retained and refined. The Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians got rather highly advanced in mathematical and medical knowledge. The water clocks got to the point of being ridiculously accurate, and the ancient romans were successfully doing cosmetic surgery and even surgery on the eyes. I remember once making my father sit down with me on a show of ancient medicine that I found fascinating, and he was looking at the tools and was naming them off accurately for what they were used for. My father, a general surgeon, claimed that the unearthed artifacts were really not that different from the default tools surgeons still use today.

The only thing I could think that could possibly majorly slow down scientific and medical advancement IS the use of magic in Thedas. It could have the negative effect of going, "That's what mages are for" and others not advancing knowledge for the man without magic. Okay, taking off the historian cap now, really!

Herbal contraceptives? Potions?

A variety of plants and potions have stramge magical properties in Dragon Age so it's not a stretch that some of them could be used as contraceptives.

Well if Anders can cure her of STDs I'm sure they have some magical contraceptives lying around as well.

He said EFFECTIVE. Vinegar would not fit that category.

Depends on the pH. Should kill those spermies fairly well, considering the setting though.

If the vinegar is applied after the act, it won't help with the sperm already in your uterus. If it's applied prior to the act, then it's going to be diluted or flushed out.

Suddenly it's like Health class.

Well, the thing is that Anders isn't his first name, either. It's a nickname (his family is from the Anderfels).

So providing you with his real name wouldn't be much help. Posted Image

It'd feed the fangirl flames, though! Don't you want that?

Wait, no, I can see why you wouldn't want that...

Can't speculate, too busy thinking that maybe Anders never loved us because if he did, he'd have at least told us his real name at some point.

He is from Anderfels? To bad he was taken away from his family as a young boy. Would love to hear him speak with our horrible german accent Posted Image

...has it been stated before that Anders isn't his first name? D: I totally missed that.
....damn.

So you created a character to lure us in and love him in Awakening, gave him as a love interest in DAII, made him betray us after some of our characters has slept with him.. and the jerk hasn't even told us his real name?!? D: It's something awful, isn't it? Like...Larry. Or is it some terrible secret?

...oh wait. I see what you did there. You made a healer... a doctor character... who we don't know his real name. Can we dub Anders as Healer Who now? (I'm suddenly getting images of Anders introducing himself as "No, just the Healer.")

Its possible Anders doesn't even know his real name. Being ripped away from his parents and what have youz. Hell, he doesn't seem to know much about anything other than the circle.

I always wondered if Anders was short for Anderfels.. its nice to know we have a character from that region.

You... you...

But how would he have ended up at the Ferelden Circle?  Is there not a Circle at the Anderfels...?!   He was 12 when he was taken there, right?!   Or maybe just his family was from the Anderfels, and his family was in Ferelden, WHAT?!  MY BRAIN

For the record, I'd just like to say this is officially my favorite thread in the forums right now. People are, for the most part, being amusing, speculating, and joking around, and not being spiteful or dwelling on negatives. And responses to the Revelation of Anders name are seriously cracking me up.

See, he didn't even need to do anything drastic in the game. All you had to do to make our jaws drop and stare at the screen was tell us it wasn't his real name!

Screw that, he'd be Anders Hawke.

Yeah, I've completely forgotten about that Chantry-blowing-up thing, Anders isn't his real name?!

I remember in DA:O when Alistair was talking about being raised by dogs in the Anderfels or something, and there was a dialogue option that said "That is what they say about Anders."

... AAUGH WHAT

You'd think, like some radical African Americans, he'd cling to his original name, not his "slave name". Assuming he got the nickname after he left home, obviously.
