I think there are 2 instances where you either do a light teasing (heart icon) or have to break the romance. Using the 2 forementioned teasing options doesn't start the romance, not really. He never pushes you towards it, even warns against it, so you can be friends with Anders despite that.

If you completely against it, +10 rivalry isn't going to break your friendship path if you are of the like mind. :)

Plus... a curious thought. Anders now carries Justice and in Dragon Age Origins Justice once indicated that he wished to experience the emotion that his host and his wife shared. So if you brush off Anders, it's kind of logical a part of him would be peeved :).

No, I had this same problem. As a male Hawke, he forced the "relationship" thing by hitting on me and not giving me a neutral ground to stand on. Without ever actually showing an interest in him (no heart icons ever selected, nor any relationship dialogue ever pursued) I was forced to gain +10 rivalry or become homosexual.

Talk about awkward.

I feel like it's almost forced because it's part of his character. I turned him down this playthrough on my FemHawke and have him almost at full rival, but he's still super, super attached. And if you've played through at all, Anders kind of takes everything to the extreme, so I'm not really surprised.
