So being able to be a Mage or a Rogue or a Warrior is fine. And being able to mix and match up what works for you best far as abilities go is fine.

But there are some problems, of course the modders have already addressed this to a certain point, by opening up all class skil trees to all characters. Something BW should have done without hestitation cause there are several relative problems in party make up based on the companions available.

Aveline is your only sword and shield tank, period, thats it, without using the mod, you can't make Fenris one, so your options, basically if you want to be a bit of a scoundrel and do things that Aveline is going to have major problems with, you have to run Sword and Shield yourself.

Whats more the game sort of assumes you're either going to be a mage or a warrior it does this in the overall choice of Carver/Bethany being the surviving sibling, if you're a warrior or rogue, you have three mages, (granted you lose one of them) if you're a mage you have three warriors, and if you're a rogue, and you got the Exiled Prince DLC you end up with four rogues.

This means that there is an inherent gap in companion characters in the game. We're missing a 3rd companion warrior, given Aveline's Lawful Good stance (to use old alignment terms) even while having rivalry or friendship with her is no loss either way, it makes things problematic in relations with her or situations that require her input.

Fenris on the other hand is nearly impossible to use as a warrior as hes built as a super crit two handed warrior, which is fine...but theres a small problem, doesn't matter what mage you bring with you, Fenris has a serious problem with it. So even using a mod to swap him over to a sword/shield tank to support you as a rogue, bringing along mages for something as offensive as HEALING, puts him in immediate contention with you and anyone else and god forbid you're a mage yourself.

Effectively the interpersonal relations between the companions in DA2 and the 3rd warrior gap makes the game somewhat unbalanced for someone that wants to play a rogue, but doesn't want to toe the line of the "law" to keep that granite faced, ginger horror Aveline happy. (Seriously if anythings proof that Ferelden is the Arkansas of Thedas, Aveline is proof) And Fenris, even modified, refuses to be anything but a jerk if you dare to have a mage around to heal the party...regardless of which mage it is.

Whats more, locking companion specializations further widens the gap, Bethany can heal, but she can't pull off what Anders can pull off in that same area. Having Anders be the only "Spirit Healer" of the bunch was a crappy move imho.

So overall I really think that the game in general almost pigeon holes the player into playing a warrior themselves, a Mage must depend on Aveline, who is not going to be dependable in the face of having to do rotten things to templars. A rogue, by definition is the very antithesis of Aveline's character, and Fenris cannot step in and take her place because of the way hes designed (without mod use) and his crappy attitude about not being allowed to DIE while in a fight cause we brought a mage along.

We're missing a third warrior. A second sword/shield candidate with something of a more acceptant nature in regards to playing things sarcastically or martially. As compared to expecting the Champion to be a damned paladin in all things right up to the point where he decides to slaughter every Templar in Kirkwall.

Effectively when I first saw the party screen and its size I was really expecting more companions than we got, and while I like Sebastian's story and hes not bad as a DLC companion, the game didn't need a third rogue. Varric or Isabela handle the rogue roles quite efficiently dependant on the type of rogue you need. Sebastian shouldn't have been a rogue, he should have been a fallen Templar who had developed new world views after his family was murdered, and less an useless add-on rogue who was pro-Chantry.

Just my thoughts. Putting them here cause posting anything in the General forum or even the spoilers forum right now is pointless cause its just full of people screaming about how "bad" the game is.

You assume that you're required to have a shield warrior and healer in your party to get through encounters. You don't. Not even for Nightmare.
