So, I go to talk to Anders where he tells me about his past. It comes to the point where I get to respond and my choices are to tell him I see why he made his choice (understanding), that it seems dubious (funny/middle of the road), to tell him he's a fool (hostile) or to flirt with him. My first choice is to be understanding, I'm a nice supportive guy and humour doesn't seem appropriate here. Flirting isn't an option as even if Merrill wasn't in the picture, chaps don't float my boy's boat. Anders however immediately takes my understanding as an invitation and tells me I'm a lovely softie under my rough exterior, then apologises for being forward and asks if I'm uncomfortable. I am.
So, the dilemma: I can lead him on and tell him that I'm not uncomfortable, I can lead him on and tell him that it was unexpected but that he shouldn't stop or I can tell him that I'm not built that way and he gets pissy as though I had led him on and that saying anything vaguely supportive meant 'I want you for the squelchy times'.
Now sure, there have been plenty of times where a conversation tree in a game hasn't gone exactly where I'd imagined but this is the first time that I've been made to feel a sod for being supportive. Lead him on, lead him on or tell him he's barking up the wrong tree and have him sulk as though I just told him it's in his contract to let me scrub my arse with his toothbrush. With my companionable/supportive legacy, there should be some way of telling him he's got the wrong idea without him going off on one as though I'm Grand High A-hole of the Free Marches.
