I'm sure this has been posted before, but I just got out of the Deep Roads and I don't want to risk ruining anything with spoilers from farther ahead if I search. And given that this must have been posted before, there's no real use in doing it again.
But, good god, what were they doing with the Bethany thing in the Deep Roads?
When you start that chapter and Varric says the champion would never have brought her sister if she knew what was down there, that was GREAT. That was absolutely perfect. I was dying to know what happens. Does she die? Does she get possessed? Does something small happen that turns her against you closer to the end? It was riveting.
Then... it ended. And she was dead of blight. Or, rather, of me, which you don't even see.
Never mind that it must have been the least interesting way for her to go. How did it happen? When did it happen? It looked like she had a cut on her hand which would explain the infection, but the setup from Varric's little spiel implied that something major was down there that completely ruins her in some fashion. If the champion knew, blah blah blah, but blight was the one danger you DO know exists going in. And you certainly have possibilities with the rock wraith and the dragon, but no, it's blight. It must have been a random fight, and you never get a clue that anything's wrong until- boom- she needs to be put down. They didn't have to give away the ending. Just show Bethany being bothered by something as you go along. Everyone's a critic, I know, but I don't know how that could have been done more wrong.c
Question: If you don't take Bethany, does one of the people end up dying anyway? I'm normally a strong proponent of running with whatever decisions you make, but I'm honestly considering a redo of the entire Deep Roads part without Bethany if no one else would die just because her death is so intensely anti-climactic. I had her as my giant group boomer, so she had a lot of strategic utility, and I don't even care about losing that- I just think a completely pointless caravan that does nothing to alter the characters except for making them rich and pissed at Bartrand would be a better plot than what I just saw.
Hell, maybe I'll do it even if someone does die. Would like to know if there's a way to tell who it will be, though. Maybe I'll take Merrill and Anders and run through on normal. Better to lose the weepy dude or the clueless chick and let Isabela keep trying to corrupt Bethany.

Sweet - thanks for posting this, as in my playthrough I agreed to Leandra's request and kept Bethany with her, but I couldn't help but wonder what would have occurred if I had brought her with me...now I know!
Anyways, if you leave your sibling with Leandra, they either go into the Circle (Bethany) or join the Templars (Carver).
I'm glad I made the choice I did. :-/
P.S. Edited to add that if you don't take Bethany no one else dies from your party in the Deep Roads.

No, no-one dies. But for me, Bethany went to the circle because she stayed with the mother.
