What am I doing wrong?  I had used Aveline throughout my first playthrough will very little hiccups.  Now, playing through again, I've been trying to use Fenris over Aveline, but I frequently swap back once I get fed up with him getting ka-crunched by anything large.  I don't care about trash fights at this point, as they seem nigh identical between Aveline and Fenris tanking.

I've tried several different builds, mixing and matching the 2H, Tevinter Fugitive, Defender, and Warmonger tree, and nothing seems to work.  Fenris either A) drops too fast or B) doesn't generate enough aggro or C) is too Stamina starved from trying to prevent A or B to taunt.

I don't see how he can underperform so much comparatively with nigh identical stats.  Or am I just underestimating Aveline's positive friendship bonus + Shield Defense (or Wall, whatever the SnS sustained is) + a shield...?

I'm really striving for Fenris so I can keep taking advantage of the super sexy Sunder + Lyrium Ghost syngery.

I had him as a main tanky character with his rivalry bonus and lyrium ghost tree + two handed tree.

The way I played was have him synergized with my offensive mage who favored primal tree. Basically, had him focus on offence, equip a couple damage resistance items to suppliment lyrium ghost, and had him open up with whirlwhind and mage cast chain lightening for the insane damage combo.
Those who were left alive while the pair waited on the cooldown, were either stunned by the tempest spell, or stunned by Fenris lyrium brust ability, or petrified, or died very very fast :P

Haven't tried insanity, but this works on normal/hard.

On boss fights you pretty much need either a spirit healer or anders backing him up with heals/damage resistance spells though. Well, either that or hex the hell out of bosses so they hit like kittens.

Edit: his abilities are extremely stamina expensive, though. Was clugging potions like mad :)

I've rarely touched the Entropy tree (in either DAs), but that would probably solve my problem.  I've ran Anders as my healer for both playthroughs (Warrior then Rogue) and both have been on Hard.  I just feel he flat out gets hit harded and knocked on his ass more dispite having equivalent Fortitudes.

Fenris' Rivalry bonus (10% crit) is worse than his Friendship bonus (10% Magic resist), at least from a tanking standpoint, right?

I dunno, maybe it's a "grass is greener" type problem that's plaguing me.

Not nesseraly unless its keeping him from death by magic damage that's giving you trouble.

Desite his lyrium ghost he is very offence oriented, and coupled with veneer of calm his damage numbers are through the roof, at least in my expereince. The faster stuff dies the less damage they inflict :P

Very different style from Aveline, that is for certain.

And maybe it is the case of 'grass is greener' because I cant make my second playthrough I recently started work with Aveline, LOL. I mean, she stays alive a lot easier, but she's the only one who stays alive compared to the game with Fenris where he just obliterated the opposition with the mage.

I think both of you are neglecting the impact that defense plays on damage mitigation. They might have the same Con (hit points) but Aveline can become crit imune and have reduced damage via def. Meaning in a hit that does crit at 100 damage Fenris takes all 100 pts, Ave might only take 10 pts...

Dear Slammin it's hard to point to what you're missing/doing wrong without you specifying the composition of your entire party.
For example mages add a ton to mitigation if you utilize them properly. Anders has his ways as Merril has hers.
Rogues can add a lot to aggro managment with both Goad and Armistice.
About the Taunt. I do not know if Taunt now generates aggro at all as it was in DAO. The ability description only says that it Transfers All of the aggro to the warrior meaning that you might need to build up some aggro before using Taunt.
About your stamina issues you might want to take Bolster from the Battlemaster tree.

I'm currently using Fenris as my tank without investing into defensive abilities outside of the Fugitive tree and using Goad instead of Taunt.

Their defense stat shouldn't vary too wildly.  Damage Resistance and Armor, that's a bit different.

I've pretty much thrown in the towel with using Fenris.  He requires too much party support whereas Aveline can invest less points in her Specialization tree to get a larger tanking boon IMO.  While I intend to get double upgraded Barrier in the next 3-5 levels, I don't want to sacrifice certain things for it currently.  Additionally, I've just opted to have Aveline be my stagger wench.

And, for anyone interested;  I'm playing on Hard.  Hawke is a Dagger Rogue, with Anders playing Healer (Creation, Specialization, and a little Elemental on top), Merrill as DPS (Primal, Entropy, Dalish Pariah) and Aveline/Fenris as tank.

I've had Fenris alternating between turn the blade and elemental aegis, depending on the mobs, with Anders playing healer and using arcane wall, and he's done pretty well for me. Only recently added arcane wall, though, mostly for the sake of my other squishies.
