UPDATE: Although the below method works, it will likely not remain working after you have saved and reloaded your game. So it's not as simple, and further work is required to fully understand the mechanic of companion armor in DA2. The method itself, however, can still be effectively used to, for example, upgrade your companions' armor to a higher tier of itself, as shown in posts below.

By using the awesome PyGFF editor , it's easy to change the appearance of your companions' armor (which is often bland and uninspiring) to any armor or clothing items Hawke can wear. For instance, Blood Dragon Armor on Carver:

Here's how:

Just open the saved game *.dds file in the PyGFF editor (use at least version 4.9b), and:

1. Delete the companion's old armor from SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST -> SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS -> (number of party member) -> SAVEGAME_EQUIPMENT_ITEMS (it's the only other item he has besides his weapon);

2. Copy here the relevant lines from SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR -> SAVEGAME_EQUIPMENT_ITEMS. Paste by selecting the companion's SAVEGAME_EQUIPMENT_ITEMS and hitting Paste.

3. Be sure to copy/paste in proper order (i.e. chest armor first, etc.) like they appear on Hawke.

Now the companion's armor will look like whatever items you copied (including chest, gauntlets, greaves and helm), but its stats will remain the same as the companion's default armor.

I have not yet tested how this will behave when the companion receives an armor upgrade. Also, don't know yet how to make equipment stats carry over as well.

HOW TO GET YOUR COMPANIONS IN THEIR ACT #3 COSTUMES:

Ok so. Instructions. I guess. Open your savegame in GFF Editor.

Go to SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST, SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS.
Now, there will be 0-6, 7... However many companions you have unlocked atm.

Under whichever one you want in the better costume, go under: SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE.
Now under that, you will see SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE_TYPE and ORIGINAL_TYPE
They will have the same number. Add 1 to it. That should do it.

Note: You cannot change sebastian atm I think. Or maybe my sebastian was already changed on this save. Not 100% sure. Also, Most of the numbers are like 1000, 1040, 1050... For me Avelines was like 1052. So, struck me as off, but w/e. Anyways, if you load your game and your companion is gone, switch it back. Easy enough.

You can edit items directly in the saved game using PyGFF. However, the crap about companion-worn items in DA2 is that their properties aren't even saved. So it's not as easy as editing Hawke-worn items.

Is there a way to get Hawe in the Armor he was wearing before character creation or is that suite available?

Is it possible to steal Sebastion's armour and use it for myself? Have to say it's pretty nails looking.

I don't have an answer for Seb, but thanks to Malcroix months ago, a mod and experimentation ,I got the effect to "stick" even if the game is saved.  This tutorial is long and will probably zone some people out who already know what they're doing, but I put up a step-by-step newb version.  Because I am one... this is my first attempt at modding anything in DA2.  Ever.  :P  This way I won't forget next time I try this.  Link

The "equip your party" mod you link to in your guide is outdated and superceded by my own Diversified Follower Armors (link in my sig!).

Okay, I'll update the link to include both.  :)

I couldn't get the new one to work, but that only means I've either got a conflict or I've done something wrong.  I'm not running even a quarter of the mods in DA2 that I am in Origins, so I don't know what's conflicting.  Obviously, I took out the old one and have tested files which were new and not saved with the old Equip your party mod.  I've got something messed up, though, somewhere.
