I first was using Carver but I found that 2H Warriors were not as effective as they were in origins.
For that was the same reason I didn't like using Fenris.
Also I don't think I used Merrill once, had little use for her at all in the game.

What party members do you use the most?

Rogue Hawke, Anders, Aveline, Merril.

Merril's my love interest and she's good at tanking and AoE lightning spells. Aveline does the primary tank job, and Anders to heal, naturally. Though I do switch out Merrill for Bethany when I have the sister active.

Warrior Hawke, Isabela, Varric and Anders.

My next playthrough, I'm thinking of...

Mage Hawke, Fenris, Merril, Varric.

Varric is my favourite character, like, ever.

I only found Aveline as the only decent Warrior, Fenris and Carver both kept falling during combat.

Rogue Hawke, Anders, Sebastian and Fenris.

would occasionally replace Anders with Merril to dish out more damage with the AOE spells. but i was so used to not using pots in DAO when i had Wynne so i mostly had Anders in my party. really liked the specialized spells and talents that the party members have, as opposed to the staunch spell selections in DAO, when everyone had the same spells to choose from. this really made each party member unique.
I finished DAO just weeks ago(yes i was a DA virgin till recently D:) and i don't know if it's just me, but on a general level, DA2 was nowhere as immersive as DAO was. enjoyed the combat though

Two-handed warrior Hawke; Varric, Merril, Anders. In Act 1 Anders spot was filled by Bethanny, and will be again at the end of the game. Redoing the playthrough... first time it was Anders until the end, who was replaced by Aveline for the final battle.

My mage Hawke's team is undecided so far as I haven't completely decided what type of mage he'll be.

There isn't much variety in Mage builds, For me, my mage was useless without the main fire and ice spells.

Same, although my Hawke was a sword-and-shield warrior and Avaline regularly got swapped out for Sebastion depending on how many tanks I decided to run with at any time. Keeping Anders and Varric around served the secondary purpose of giving me a lot of get-out-of-jail-free cards, as well. Anders was a good one to turn to if I needed help with a magical problem, and Varric's ability to bluff his way through nearly any situation with a tall tale is as amusing as it is useful. Endgame team was Anders, Bethany, and Varric. As a point of interest: Bethany filled Avaline's slot for the entire first act, and would have continued to do so after that had the game allowed it.

2h Warrior, Fenris, Sebastian, Anders. As you can imagine, my final moments were absolutely delightful without Anders. |:

Merill (was Bethany until the Templars got her)

I every so often switch Merill with Isabella and used her slot for whenever i had to use another companion in the quests.

What s/he said. I liked Merrill, but as a DPS mage, I did not often bring her along. And as much as I did like her, I grumbled when I had to leave Anders at home because I went through a hell of a lot of healing potions. *With* Anders in the party, I think I went through all of Act 1 without using a single healing potion.

Tanking part is so true.

Same team:

Mage Hawke
Anders
Fenris
but... im using Merril instead of Varric since im romancing her. For powerplay ill agree varric is the better.

First Playthough
Most of Game - Warrior Hawke, Varric, Anders and Fenris.
At the End - WH, Bethany, Merril and Aveline.

On second playthough. Thinking of Using a Rogue Hawke. And thinking of using Isabela as well. Can a two rogue's in a party work?

- Archer Rogue Hawke
- Fenris built half tanking, half dps
- Anders -- until the end, then I replaced him with Merrill for obvious reasons. Healing was useless anyways, not sure I'd use Anders again.
- Isabela

Didn't expect Varric to come out as my favourite, I'm defintiely using him next game.

I keep switching the 4th person. I rarely use other mages though :P so it's usually either Izzy or Ave, mostly Izzy. I've noticed that Fenris is a lot better tank than Ave, he holds the aggro better and does considerable damage. Maybe I screwed up Ave's specs x) ah well.
