These guys are like Shepard, Tali, and Garrus from ME.

Warrior Hawke, Varric, Isabela, Bethany/Merrill.
Though I found that WH, Varric, Sebastian, and Merrill are pure destruction. I just don't like Seb well enough to be on the A team.

1st Playthrough on Hard (currently at the middle of Act 3)
2H fem Hawke (off tank vanguard/ reaver 3points^^/ templar)
Sebastian (great nuke potential when he build up chains + the Power talent
stuns)
Varric (best ranged DPS thx to Well Oiled and Bianca's Song)
Bethany (until she got snitched away by the Templars)/ Anders (Support and Heal only)/ Merril (Support and Nuke) depending on my mood or needs (i do a lot of quicksaves and regular saves^^)
i also used to have Fenris in my party before i got Sebastian since he's awesome as support Tank (improved Elemantal Aegis plus improved Rally spam in combination with his great passives)... also got my romance with him and still aimed for his rivalry status (i like that passive more^^)
on my next playthrough i guess i'll roll a mage (thou i already know that i'll swear a lot while playing with this "squishy"" class xD )
EDIT: just for the lulz i tried to solo the high dragon on hard... I FREAKIN KILLED IT ALONE XD
btw... this dragon has the WORST AI EVER... the only challengeing part on this fights to have enough pots while the dragon sitl on top of the hill and lets it's breed hunt me (because only there the fireballs are homing right onto me -.-)

My constants for my mage Hawke playthrough were Fenris and Varrick.
Fenris can be a pretty mean offensive tank when supplimented with right mage/rogue skills
.
Last one was switched a lot between the rest, through Isabella and Anders got a bit of playtime.

My A Team on my mage play through was:
Hawke
Avaline
Isabella
the 4th varies honestly
On my Rogue my A team was:
Hawke
Avaline
Bethany (really pissed me off that Bioware killed her off/sent her away as one of only two mages with healing ability plus liked having her around in general)
Anders (cause I needed a healer would of prefered to keep Bethany over "Emo" Templar Hating Anders/Justice)
the fourth would vary here too between Isabella, Varric, and Merrill depending on what was needed
The only time I used Sabastion was on his personal quest.

My favorite was probably Fenris, Merrill, and Varric with my DW Rogue Hawke.
I took Fenris largely because I played on normal my first time, and I figured he'd be far less capable on my next playthrough on the higher difficulties, but he was surprisingly hardy. He generates far more AoE aggro than Aveline, has excellent magic resistance (though realistically, magic makes up a very small fraction of the damage you take, I found), and is reasonably survivalable with my preferred sustainables running. There were a small handful of fights where he got knocked around a lot that I think having Aveline might have helped. Of course for the endgame I sided with the mages and picked the wrong options for him, so he left the party for good.
I never found healing to be a make or break ability, and Merrill's personal tree giving her the ability to ignore willpower in favor of constitution made her capable of standing right in melee and even draw some aggro. Befriending her and upgrading her armor meant she virtually never ran low on health, and using abilities like Walking Bomb, Tempest and Chain Lightning cleared out groups of enemies in record time. Truthfully, I just built Anders badly, though - I found investing in the Elemental tree was a mistake since it had only OK damage and extremely low utitility compared to Primal (which I suspect every mage I build from now on will invest in).
Varric was just cool and had great AoE as an archer as well as solid single target and autoattack. He's probably still slightly worse than Sebastian due to his inability to swap weapons, at least until the late game when Bianca gets 4(!) rune slots. Rogues offer such great utility in this game, though, you really can't go wrong with any of them - I'm tempted to build a pure utility rogue with heavy investments in Sabotage and Subterfuge.
For the rest of the party, I like Aveline, but her interactions with some of the rest of the party ended up being so prickly I tended to be somewhat reluctant to use her. Isabela was redundant since my Hawke was a DW rogue, and I honestly found her personal tree to be head-scratchingly terrible, plus she ending up leaving after act 2. I found Sebastian's personality to be virtually intolerable, and after listening to his little speech if you spare Anders makes me reluctant to even recruit him again. I swapped Anders in for Merrill fairly often, but I'd built him badly and he spent most of his time autoattacking and being a buffbot, which was really boring.

First time through it was 2h warrior me, Aveline, Anders and Varric. Aveline was the person I would switch out when I needed to take someone else with me.
This current time through it's mage me, Fenris, Merril, whichever rogue strikes my fancy that exact second. I'm trying to *not* use Varric in this one because I used him so much the first time through, but he's just so awesome all around I still bring him along sometimes.
Merril, I suspect, is going to wind up my Sten of Dragon Age 2: a character I love, but a character I never take with me anywhere.

PC - Mage Spirit Healer / Creation
Anders - Damage Caster
Aveline - Tank
Isabela - Trap and Lock skank
The party banter is pretty epic with this setup, and as long as you spec Isabela right, in the long run, she's a completely badass character. Lot's of complainers think she's weak, but max out her Swashbuckler tree and dual wield, and use her skills appropriately and I'm one to believe she's actually better than Varric in many cases - especially with Aveline by her side!

My first play thru is this
1. Mr. Hawke/Warrior - Blood Reaver/Templar Combination
2. Aveline - Defender
3. Merril - DPS
4. Varric - DPS Range/disarm traps and unlock
5. Bethany - Healer in prologue and Chapter 1
Second Play Thru
1. Mr Hawke - Rogue/ Ranged DPS/trap disarm lockpicker
2. Aveline - Defender/Sword and Shield
3. Merril - DPS
4. Varric - Rogue/Ranged DPS/ Trap disarm and lockpicker
5. Bethany - DPS/Healer
Before the end of chapter 1 Bethany is maxed out on friendship. Then I max out all of Merril, Varric, and Aveline's friend ship and I only play with these people and no one else.

2-handed warrior Hawke, Isabela, Varric, and Bethany (later Anders).
Hawke was the damage sponge as well as AoE damage dealer. She held up exceptionally well in just about any situation, especially mages and demons due to her Templar tree. Tho only situation in which she was subpar, was in the duel with Arishok. I just hate that guy.
Isabela was great at damaging single enemies extremely quickly and taking care of stragglers away from my main target. She murdered those Kirkwall statues like mad. She seemed to made of glass though, so I had to keep my eyes on her and draw aggro towards Hawke when needed.
Varric served as the lockpicker and trap disarmer, along with dealing some heavy damage from afar. He was an invaluable member of my team, especially in the last hours of the game.
Bethany was my healer and primal mage. Sadly, I had to replace her with Anders, due to obvious reasons, who was also a healer but had support spells such as Haste instead of damage dealing ones. I'd much rather take Merrill insead of him, but her lack of heal did not help. I'll play around with the builds some more on my next playtrough and see what can be done.

I never had a problem with healing even on normal, with the exception of bethany as a healer and using anders on his personal quests I tore thru everything with little to no problems. Some might find this strange but Mr hawke blood reaver, merril, aveline and varric it was really rare for any of my party members to die.
I need to finish my second play thru then I will play again on the difficulty after normal.

Mage Hawke, Fenris, Carver, and Varric.
When I lose Carver, it'll probably be Mage Hawke, Fenris, Isabela, and Varric.
Sometimes I'll swap out Isabela/Carver to put in Merrill, but that's more to hear her dialogue and watch her reactions than for tactical considerations.
