I just finished the game and didn't really get a sense of what friendship and rivalry actually did at all.  I'm sure my romance wouldn't have worked out if the person was a rival I guess.

But other than that, I had various people at full friendship or rivalry, and after reading through many spoiler topics it looks like things play out exactly the same regardless.  I mean, even the people at full rivalry kept asking to see me and do their quests on each new chapter.

Romances work whether you choose friendship or rivalry.  I think the only difference between the friendmances and the rivalmances is that the love scenes are somewhat different.  Fenris is really the only example of that I have seen, however.  I don't know how it works for the other LI's.

I think there are slight variations on friendship or rivalry paths with the romance ( I only have Fenris one to judge by, since it's the only one I played so far), but either full friendship or full rivalry lead to a resolution where the companions become loyal to -you- not your ideology, or your cause.

Isabella at full friendship does something completely unexpected even for herself, for example, and while she hearheartedly blames you for your influence she has your back no matter what.

In case with Fenris, I had him on rivalry path and while he fought my decisions tooth and nail all along the way, and I fully expected a tragic resolution to the romance, he floored me when he stuck by me.

Aveline on rivalry path also very, very interesting and she has your back despite your prior disagreements after you have 'pushed her beyond her limits' and won her over.

Etc :)
