Pause the game. Select your mage. At the bottom of the screen you'll see an icon that looks like a half moon with three stars. Click on it. Then select the spell you wish to cast. Now your cursor will look like a half moon with an arrow. Click where you want the mage to cast the spell (on a target creature for spells like Magic Missile, on an area for spells like Stinking Cloud). Now unpause the game and your mage will cast the spell.

Mages are a must - offensive spell especially sleep, blindness and fireballs Mwahaha.
Although in BG1 i reccomend clerics more - you need the healing and disabling spells, get your mages summon spell to - you'll fail without later in game.
mages only become useful at level 3.
Levels 1 and two allow a grand total of 5 damage from magic missile...
Though sleep and blindness is great.

At L1, specialist mages get 3 spells I think, which could just be three Sleeps. These are awesome because Sleep is so fast to cast. I never really liked it much before my recent run, but it's quite honestly a lifesaver. A Sleep spell can take out a whole bunch of bad guys, at a range, even very dangerous ones like Bandits, far more effectively than a Cleric or Fighter.

At level 1 general mages get one memorise slot and two starting spells, specialists get +1 slot and starting spell.
Unfortunatly only priests get the slot bonuses from attributes (if only if only there was int slot bonus XD)
You know quayle gets general mage number of slots when you first find him, after he levels as mage he gets the extra slots back XD

Sorry, must be 2 at 1st level and 3 at 2nd, then. Still, mages are definately not necessary, but can be really useful if you use them right.
