So I'm sent to track down an alliance of mages and templars who want to overthrow Meredith. The guy who sends me is the HEAD MAGE, who should be SIDING with the alliance.
Despite constantly trying to not fight, the game FORCES ME to slaughter the people with whom I should be allied.
Finally, when I report back to the mage who sent me, he says "They wanted to get rid of Meredith? Maybe I shouldn't have sent you."
This was intensely irritating to me, and it basically ruined the rest of my playthrough. What's the point of an RPG if you're forced down one narrow path? This happened many times in the game, but this quest is the worst offender.
anyone else really irritated by the conspiracy quest?

This was my least favorite quest. Bioware must have been rushed on this one.

The point is to show you how desperate they have become. You should NOT be allied with them, they are using blood magic, summoning demons, and kidnapped your brother/sister/Merrill and were going to kill them after they killed you. Things get worse later. The point of the whole story of Dragon Age II is that the world has descended into chaos and the Chantry is at war with the mages. Your decisions can't stop it, your decisions are to determine how it happened, and possibly what your role will be in the future.
It's not "game fail"

Mages and Templars meeting in Secret, planning to overthrow Meredith, already worried, because Members of their group are inviting others without actually thinking. And then 4 heavily armed People stumble into that meeting. And you expect them to invite you for a cup of tea?
They are desperate, and in a general "shoot first, ask questions later" kind of mood.
