 I would have checked the previous posts, but with the lack of a good search engine its a bit daunting to go through pages of threads :P

Has anyone found a way to fix the issue of speech when headphones are used? (I know about using the sound mixer to crank up the volume - but it isn't that great a fix)

Or perhaps Bioware will do a patch that will allow a seperate option for headphone users to crank up the volume in game :P

I don't use headphones but if I recall you need to tick force stereo in game. Good luck.

Thats for the issue with the violin noise in fights.

I am talking about the quietness of the speech, even with Force Stereo on :P

Well... I guess you must have tried it as it wouldn't hurt to. All that I've read indicates the speech is derived from the center channel (7.1 or 5.1); of course I don't know that for sure.

Since you've probably tried that, I am out of suggestions other than playing with your sound mixer.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of sound card/headphones do you use (someone else may have the same issues/resolutions)?

I'm having the same issue of conversation sound being incredibly quieter compared to sound effects during fights. It's to the point where if I crank up the volume so I can hear conversation audio than everything else is way to loud. This is especially a problem while I'm talking to friends on skype and/or listening to music (note: it doesn't actually make the sound quieter just makes it harder to hear because of people talking/songs playing).

I'm using on board Realtek audio with an optical cable to my Astro a40s + mixamp.

Its as if Bioware has decided to use EAX by default :(

But I have noticed this in the DragonAge.ini file

These two lines

CutsceneListenerRadius=1
ListenerPositionOffset=0.5

I am going to try with these settings

CutsceneListenerRadius=1
ListenerPositionOffset=0.1

or

CutsceneListenerRadius=2
ListenerPositionOffset=0.1

I will let people know the difference.

Success

CutsceneListenerRadius=1
ListenerPositionOffset=0.1

Works a treat :)

Gimme high fives! And money helps too :P lol

For people wanting to do this..

Check your Documents folder and goto Bioware > Dragon Age 2 > Settings folder

Open up DragonAge.ini file in that folder

And edit the number from 0.5 to 0.1 for the line

ListenerPositionOffset = 0.5 (its under the audio section)

EDIT: You can change the radius to 2 just incase during a cutscene someone is walking and talking from the distance :)

Might be a good idea if Bioware in the next patch allows an audio option to change the distance of the listening position :)

I assume all those experiencing this issue are using 5.1+ sound?

On mine it's pretty much all audio that is quieter than other games.  I had to crank up the main volume in Windows.  Dialogue while playing can still be quiet as it seems to fall off rapidly with distance.  Dialogue in cut scenes is okay now with the volume boost.  Is that .ini fix just for cutscenes?

And yeah... I have the sound device in Windows set to 5.1 speakers, but in the Creative control panel it is set to Headphone with CMSS surround enabled.  The surround effects do seem to be working too.  Just kinda soft.   Not using Force Headphone in game.  I figured that would kill surround.

Dialogue also seems to be lower quality (higher compression?) than DA:O.  Is that the case or is this a codec problem I can fix somehow?  It's not terrible.  It just doesn't sound as clear as DA:O.  Sound card is a X-Fi Titanium HD, latest drivers.  Win7-64.

No using headphones, I hear this is an issue with 2 speaker systems also.

But my little fix, helped in that regard, so I am happy.

I had a similar issue with extremely quiet voices when I first started playing.  Windows was set to 2.0 Speakers, the game was at default settings.  Using an SB X-Fi.

I managed to resolve the issue on my machine by telling Windows that I had "full size speakers" (the subwoofer on my speakers is just part of the Front Left/Right connector - no separate subwoofer channel), and forcing the game to "Use Stereo Sound (for Headphones)".

It's like the game sees that my sound card is capable of a 5.1 speaker system, and just ignores the fact that I have Windows set to a 2.0 speaker system.

Giving this thread a bump as I have the same sound issue.
Forums without a search options are a joke.
