I finished my first run through of DA2 last night as a canon Mage-Hawke. I believe I respec'd 4-5 times trying to find a solid Mage build. In DA:O Mages were OP, no argument there...but then again they were mages, not soldiers or brigands. But in DA2 Mages feel...weak.
After playing with all the tree lines I found that honestly the Elemental/Primal tree was the best for me. But even then I didn't feel like I did in DA:O, where a Mage could wipe all enemies off the field of battle with a super spell combo. That is good in a way, since the combo system now relies on other class combos instead of spell combos.
My biggest gripe is the amount of damage output that Mage have compared to other classes. When swapping to play Fenris or Varric, the difference was staggering. The amount of damage Varric could unload put my Mage to shame, and really made me wonder why I was playing a Mage. AoE? Well Warriors and Rogues all have massive AoE. Single target damage? Varric politely chuckled at that notion. CC and Heals? Well that just may be the only role that Mages win on. But should Mage-Hawke really be seen as a disabler over a mealstrom of violence?
The other thing that I have to complain about are the Mage specialization trees. To put it simply...they suck. Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage was godly in DA:O. However, Blood Mage was kinda weak in DA2 to be honest. I used it briefly, but found some abilities bugged (Blood Slave didn't work for me ever), and Hemorrhage didn't seem nearly effective as its DA:O counterpart (possibly due to the long casting animation). Spirit Healer is...well I got through the game fine with a singular Heal and potions, but having to go into a "Healing Stance" seems ridiculous to me. Force Mage actually seemed to be the only decent one specialization, but even then it focuses on CC more than anything and appears to be a nod to the Mass Effect Adepts more than anything else.
Overall, about halfway through the 2nd Act I found myself wishing I was a Warrior instead of a Mage...something I never would have said in DA:O. So for run #2, its time for Warrior-Beardy-Hawke.
Magic is...Unimpressive. Now Minsc Leads! Swords for Everybody!

Agreed. I'm not sure I even have anything to add. You covered it pretty well.

I'm still early in my mage play through, but am seeing alot of what you mentioned.
I think the secret to mages may be running multiple. I'm running Merril, Varric, Carver, and my mage right now and when Merril and I are still in the fight things go smoothly, but when one of us gets picked off its a slow death for all.

Same thing I'm going through as well. Playing on NM the only build that really helps my party is to play a shutdown build with upgraded chain lightning to leech off of Fenris' awesomeness.
Gravitic ring, both glyph spells, chain lightning, hemorrhage, and horror can lockdown groups about as well as mages in DA:O.

To get the most out of the mage, you need to use the combo moves.. the damage output goes way up when you stagger/disorient/brittle.. and you need to chose companion abilities to suit you.. and you need to focus.. concentrate on a few trees.. focus on mastering a tree rather then spreading your abilities out.

Blood mage spec plus a couple of items with the "Blood Magic" property = unlimited fuel for spellcasting. Add spirit healer for the rez and the excellent passive which has great synergy with BM. Spec into sustains sufficient to eat up the whole of your actual mana pool as you'll almost never use mana to cast spells. Blow stuff up with impunity.

One other complaint...my Fireball spell would hit has hard as my standard attack. And while a Fireball does that damage to multiple targets, I woud *think* that a flaming ball of fire would hit significantly harder than my auto attack.

Krule777 is absolutely right. To get the most out of mages you DO need to use combo moves. Unfortunately they still don't hold a candle to 2h Warriors. I don't mind being a CC bot(Everquest 1 Enchanter, Lower Guk, Frenzied Ghoul runs away at low health). As long as its effective.

I perfer a combination of ice/fire and battle magic, buffs for the party and armor. Keep in mind that all of the companions have their own 'class' that isn't useable by you. This is what makes them even stronger.

Agreed. Mage was definitely an OP class in DA:O and now they have been reduced to "support roles" , now I do believe the game is a lot of fun. As a rogue or warrior. Mage? Not so much. My other gripe is why do the robes look so chitty? Bethany's looks nice. Some of the NPCs are pretty good, but the robes we get, especially for fem Hawke, look like something a grandma might wear. At least the Tevinter robes in DA:O looked cool. Did someone decide that since mages were OP in DA:O that they needed to absolutely suck in DA2? That's the word on the road anyways, take it for what it's worth.
