So, it's failed. We "whiners" were right at last.

my post is entirely DA2 [and ME2] related, which are mainstream games.

Also, like you, the OP, say yourself, we don't know salesfigures.. How you can call it failed with absolutly nothing credible to back it up is beyond me.

sales are judged by pre orders and 1st weeks sales.
this is why it couldnt be a fail for EA,now the dlc might be a fail, too early to tell.
they ordered a rush release to show investors that buying out BW was a good move.
but the only real losers are the punters.
give it a few days and i can give you the figures for returns to a major retail distributor.
and if theres one thing determines fail its those figures on how many sold to returned ratio.
especially when a games sold at top whack.
ps..it also affects how many units are taken next time around.

Never did that before, but: ROFL!
Will it get better sales? Possibly. Is it the better game? Hell no.

But DA2 do have qualities and is a game I enjoy playing. I kind of like the " cinematic plotting effect " ( meaning " game history build like a movie." ) and so, it is not a fail by itself.

I adore DA2 but I'm not sure of what you just said... completely not. And i'd prefer this game to not outsell Origins, so BioWare take time and precautions to make a very very very very awesome DA3 fusing everything great in DA2 and everything awesome in Origins, with new awesome ideas. I can wait. Just release it in 2015 (so don't forget the Back to the Future 4th wall...)

So before declaring it a failure, what's the definition of failure?

A Very vocal minority.

Bioware were in the right direction, but took it too far IMO. However, that doesn't make it a failure, there's so much in this game that's awesome, dwelling on what's bad is not my intent and so far -- I'm on act 3 and can't conteniue untill the weekend because my laptop is not up for the task. The elves were far from how horrible the fans described them before release.

I play mostly for story, so it's not going to touch DA:O in terms of favorite games. However, it's still a decent sequel with great parallels to DA:O. Again, this is me barely scraping the surface of the game. I like it thus far.
